Saturday
Beta.
That 6,000' couloir that almost always has crap conditions . . . has crap conditions and doesn't look as couloiry this year.
The forecast called for highs in the low 20s but with a -10F windchill. It seemed accurate. It was comfortable when we were out of the wind. But one gust and your face hurt, everything felt cold, and sometimes you got an instant ice-cream headache sans ice cream.
This picture makes it look okay.
This one evidences the reality: We scored 4,500' of varying degrees of breakable crust. The best parts were where it was unbreakable windboard.
Whatsupdoc pretends to enjoy the conditions.
You know what, though? It was still fun and very good time, albeit in a type-II-ish way.Last edited by AKbruin; 02-27-2017 at 02:13 PM.

Nice AK>
We found similar conditions on Fri/Sat. Wind found its way into Morrison col by Friday and we were pretty disappointed with snow conditions, but it is a great tour and there were some fun turns. Saturday we got some redemption with 2 laps in Punta Bardini chutes. Even open areas in the chutes had wind board, but more protected areas were good.
We were considering going into Tungstar bowls, but now glad we didn't.
Ridiculous coverage everywhere.
On the gossip front - we talked with J. Morrison and partner end of day at convict lake on Friday. They skied Pinner AND Mendenhall. Yowzaa.

Nice. I had considered both Mendenhall and (more likely) Pinner, but I just didn't see how I could feel safe given the danger of wind slabs at the top. I'm guessing there was a ton of avy debris in Pinner. (ETA: I'm not saying that it wasn't safe for Morrison; just that I didn't have sufficient confidence in my own avy forecasting abilities.)
No, we went further up the canyon. Scheelite looked like shit. There was avy debris everywhere and probably wind slabs at the top.Last edited by AKbruin; 02-27-2017 at 02:16 PM.

we saw some debris in mendenhall at the bottom. we didn't see any in pinner so I think they really scored on that one. said both skied really good and filled in

Awesome photos Texass and nice riding Pajamas. I've always wanted to do Morrison Col. Mendenhall looks super juicy right now.
Any guesses on conditions on eastern aspects (corn?) or northern couloirs for later this week?

Caltrans f'ing rules. Risking life and limb to give us access to the goods -- and I'm not just talking about the plow ops.
Big ups.

Great day. I've wanted to do this line for a long time but was usually turned away by conditions in the past. Yesterday, we expected it to be fairly firm and likely crap. But somehow everything held together and we scored ripper corn in early March. Pretty stoked.
