    I doubt any shops have changed over from summer mode so you probably have to wait a few weeks to get a tune at any shop.

    Local news source Buckrail reports that JHMR is reporting snowiest Oct in 16 seasons! Hurray!

    When I arrived in JH in '91 people had been skiing Teton Pass since before Halloween.

    oh yeah, I remember that one. that was a good season. killer, in fact.

    Hurray!

    Roof:
    SNOWPACK: Overall, there was shallow snowpack with a good amount of variation in snow depth and strength. The avalanche bed surface was a crust layer from the early part of November (there is also a crust from latter October, which in some areas the avalanche may have scoured down to). The crust?s hardness varied with snow depth (shallower areas having weaker crusts). The failure layer was a layer of variable thickness that was composed of 2-4mm depth hoar. The size of the depth hoar varied with total snow depth (deeper areas having smaller grains), but the facets were well developed and striations were easily visible. Some locations had thin slabs of 1 finger hardness, but the majority of the overlying snow was fist and four finger hardness facets, graupel, and decomposing/fragmenting snow grains. I did not observe any surface hoar in any of the pits that I dug. Crown depths varied from 20cm to 70cm(8-28?), and the average crown depth was 40cm (16?). Snow depth in the upper starting zone varied from 80-130cm (31-51?).
    Campbell;
    Unfortunately while we were at the scene, the area was still threatened by other avalanches. A warm-up was causing sloughs to run nearby so we concentrated on getting ourselves and the victim out of the area as fast as possible. I was unable to visit the starting zone of the slide. Interviewing one of the party members, observations at the scene and other activity this season, it appeared that the bed surface was the crust still remaining from our dense (rain crust likely involved at these altitudes) mid October snowfall. That layer was overlain by several alternating layers of surface hoar and light density snow and has been responsible for numerous big slides and the two prior fatalities in the area. The vertical fall of the slide was approxiamately 1400 feet. (7800ft to 9200ft) 18-24 inch crown. The bed surface was rock in some places so the slide may have dug through the October layer once it gained a little momentum.

    Overnight storm put 4 inches in the backyard today, and about 8 inches on the pass via my observations in Glory Bowl. Lots of shrubs and rock, so broccoli salad is all I saw today.
