    The Sarcasm Thread

The Highest Form of Intelligence: Sarcasm Increases Creativity Through Abstract Thinking for Both Expressers and Recipients
    http://www.hbs.edu/faculty/Pages/item.aspx?num=49283
Sarcasm is ubiquitous in organizations. Despite its prevalence, we know surprisingly little about the cognitive experiences of sarcastic expressers and recipients or their behavioral implications. The current research proposes and tests a novel theoretical model in which both the construction and interpretation of sarcasm lead to greater creativity because they activate abstract thinking. Studies 1 and 2 found that both sarcasm expressers and recipients reported more conflict but also demonstrated enhanced creativity following a simulated sarcastic conversation or after recalling a sarcastic exchange. Study 3 demonstrated that sarcasm's effect on creativity for both parties was mediated by abstract thinking and generalizes across different forms of sarcasm. Finally, Study 4 found when participants expressed sarcasm toward or received sarcasm from a trusted other, creativity increased but conflict did not. We discuss sarcasm as a double-edged sword: despite its role in instigating conflict, it can also be a catalyst for creativity.

Yeah, well kind of, but sarcasm is not ironism. Or something like that.

Always knew my personal sarcasm = personal brilliance. Does this mean crass people from East Coast are more smarter than West Coasters who say what they mean? Discuss.

This brings back an old New Yorker cartoon.

It may not have been the new Yorker, but it was that style.

In the cartoon are 2 30+ something men, the East Coaster in suit, tie, nice shoes, the West Coast guy with goatee, sandals and shades.

Each has a thought bubble and a speech bubble.

East Coast Speech Bubble: "Fuck You", Thought Bubble "Have a Nice Day:

West Coast Speech Bubble: "Have a Nice Day", Thought Bubble: "Fuck You".

Having lived the first 17 years in MN and WI and moved between Portland and Seattle since 1973, I find this cartoon to be pithier and pithier as the years go by.

One form of irony is sarcasm, the use of words or phrases which literally mean one thing, but in context or inflection, mean another. Ex. digitaldeath's date sees him without pants and says, "No shrinkage there."

Situational or dramatic irony is different.

New Hampshire has better steep skiing terrain than any state west of the mississippi
Properly driven, a car without snow tires is safer in the winter
Wearing a helmet will force you into skiing more recklessly than letting ur brain just hang out
There are numerous plate bindings that are better for BC skiing than dynafits
If you take avy 2 you will die, most likely horrendously
Skiing a ski greater than 92 underfoot is poor style and is nothing short of cheating when skiing pow

I cannot state these things without at least a hint of sarcasm, whereas somewhere there might be some dummie that believes all of them - and it might not be digitaldeath
