Feeler WTB: Sub $1K trail bike

Probably should have done this before searching elsewhere.

Looking for a trail bike. Large frame. Plan to ride it a bit myself but it's mainly for loaning out to friends who keep saying they want to try MTB but clearly have no interest in buying a bike (at least until I get them hooked that is). I have a Giant Reign, would love something with less travel to help justify having a second bike. 4" travel with modern-ish angles would kick ass. (Blur 4x, anyone?). Or a long travel 650B or 29er I guess... but really I'd prefer full suspension.

I have an older giant trance x I'm about to unload. maybe to close to the reign though?
