Sure. Here's the instructions for removal (actually, they are for installing the brakes, but just do it in reverse) from Lou Dawson:

You may want to increase the lateral release value by a number or so if you can, as the friction from the brake adds to the value when the brake is installed.

    What he said.

Also, it's a whole lot easier to mount a Vertical without brakes. You won't be fiddling with the spring clip that holds the brake in place, and most importantly, since it's a bit of a challenge to re-install the heel piece after fitting the brake, you'll eliminate the risk of cross-threading the big screw on the heel piece since you're not removing an re-installing the heel piece.

When I'm installing brakes, I use a plastic spring clamp to hold the brake down (via the heel pad) when refitting the heel.

Check the photo in the above link with the caption: "Arms on brake engage vertical aluminum post spindle.". Note how the brake pad sits and interferes with re-installation of the heel piece? This is where holding down the brake via with a clamp on the heel pad comes into play. It turns a three hand job into a two hand job (get your minds out of the gutter folks ). If you're not mounting a brake, you bypass this mess.

    Cheers,
    Thom
