Wow, busy day up there... both great write ups, but Jeff Lane sums it up well:

Remember, avalanches are a natural phenomenon that don’t care who you are, what you know, or how good of a skier/rider/climber you are. They treat people indiscriminately and often ruthlessly. I feel fortunate to have escaped unharmed, but that didn’t happen because of something I did or didn’t do…it’s because I was lucky. By sharing this incident, I hope that others can develop a strong sense of respect for these events and do everything possible to not be involved in one.

Glad it didn't get ugly. I am always surprised and thankful more people don't get in trouble up there. It is an odd convergence of serious danger, accessibility, and inexperienced foot traffic. Enjoyed the write ups as well. Spring not here (there) yet....

At about 12:00 noon, the first skier to attempt to descend Right Gully made a what witnesses described as a “massive jump turn” into what was the deepest area of windblown snow near the skiers right side. This triggered a thin slab (4-10″ deep by several estimates) that carried the skier downslope a few hundred feet. He was able to get away from the moving debris before it spilled through the mouth of the gully and into Lunch Rocks. This slide propagated around most of the avalanche start zone of Right Gully.

Sounds kinda like a poorly done ski cut.

It's called a stationary ski cut, a technique which is no longer in favor for obvious reasons.

For those of you with better things to do than closely monitor the ECRC thread, here's a highly valuable report from the Oakes Gulf avy:

Oh lookin back thru this season I missed ....
Here same story every time forecasts are ignored...though the slide danger areas were limited ,the riders aimed right at them, picking terrain favorites over stable snowpack. That "massive jump turn"lol ,is what one of our late buddies called "testing the snowpack ,with a 30 footer". RIP, dude you ripped. Article writer ,and all got away lucky ,despite the "small" remarks about the slide sizes-if you get caught in front of a slide ,you usually get munched badly.

Such a succinct analysis 1.5 months and 2000 miles out.
