Thread: Iceman pak for your leg?

I've seen a couple of threads mention the iceman setup to keep your leg's swelling at bay. Any links or information on it would be greatly appreciated. Google is giving me nothin!

My IceMan was sent home with me after surgery. Made by DonJoy. Here is a link.

Iceman looks like a battery operated pump deal.

My wife got a shoulder unit post-op. It was just one hose connected to the drain hole of a one quart coleman water jug.
Fill the jug with ice water and place it above the injury. Every now and then you set it on the floor to drain and re-position it above the injury to get fresh ice water into the pack.

Bet they are damned expensive (med. insurance post-op) but could be a cheap ebay purchase.

i had and non battery one like this. but it was a different brand. cryo-cuff its called.

Maybe I'll live in Tahoe someday, but not living there right now. We would've taken runs by now if I was I'm on the EC, that pic was when I was hiking 1.5 years ago at Tahoe. Thanks a bunch for the offer though. I'll see if my doc can hook me up. From the reports, looks like it's well worth it's money in recovery time and pain management.

Of note, at PT they have me icing using a similar device at the end of every session except that it fills up with mad pressure then releases and refills to pulsate the swelling out of the joint. Pretty cool deal.

its not like you are drinking the water. it just goes in the cuff on your knee, and then back to the container.

i got mine from the surgery ward at MGH. just woke up and it was on my knee. i dont think its really much better than using bags of ice and an ace bandage to keep the ice tight. i found i got more uniform icing with ice bags. the good thing about cryo-cuff/iceman is when you are just out of surgey, and getting to the freezer is painfull and possibly impossible, you can load the thing up and have a seriously long ice session without anyone bringing you more ice.

I was thinking more about the cuff and any wound ooze santorum type of stuff that might be crusted on the cuff. you might want to disinfect that.

The battery op version with the pump sounds like the ultra chilla

I called the doc and he said that it's already ordered and will be hooked up post op. They don't know if the insurance will cover it yet, but told me that it retails for 150. You can get it on ebay for cheaper, but I think I'll just stick with this and see if insurance will pay.

They also ordered the CPM machine, we'll see if insurance covers that too. Anyone use one before? Is it worth it?

truth - is this what you are using at PT?

i had one for a week after surgery. that's all insurance covered and i was bummed to give it up. they did say i could pay $100 to rent it for another week and i almost did. probably worth it but i switched to bags of frozen peas

i HIGHLY recommend this thing.

edit - i never used a CPM machine this time around or e-stim at PT. shit was much easier than 15 years ago...

Looks like the doc rented me the EBI Controlled Cold Therapy system. Pretty cool, you just plug it in, add water, and set the temp. The water flows through a container to a velcroed ice pad like the Donjoy Iceman, but no need to add ice, it just cools it down to a set temp and circulates. Granted, my electric bill may be higher this week, but I don't have to make those trips to the freezer every 4 hours. It's fairly loud too with the compressor fan, but it's more like white noise than anything else. Highly recommend it if you have a choice. I think I have to give it back in a week, I'll be sad to see it go!

Oh, I've also got the Optiflex CPM for a week too. Lots of toys to play with while riding the couch.

Wife just came home with one of these things.
I think it "fell off a truck"

One of her friends gave it to her for me. It is so sweet comapared to ice packs.
A bit of a hassle if you just need a quick icing after a workout.

But if you have chronic shit or injuries that can use icing a few times a day its super nice.

I parked it for 20 minutes each on my fracture tibia, on my ankle, and on my knee.

then just cuz I strapped it too my thigh (its been cramping up due to compensation and stress).
That felt super sweet as well.

The only downside is it takes a lot of ice. and you have the hassle of filling it before use.

I thoroughly recommend it for anyone with a surgery or other injury recovery.

Actually, if you have some chronic shit, use it in conjunction with the Iceman and you're set.
