Yes he can, if he has a base edge file guide. I know lots of home tuners don't do much at all to their base edges, and thus don't own the equipment, or have the experience to proficiently file a base edge.

You can get a ski with a low base edge bevel to slide, clearly, but it's faster, smoother and more fun with a higher base edge bevel.

My everyday skis (110mm underfoot) are set up 1.5 base, 3 side, my powder skis are 2 base, 3 side, and my touring skis are 2 base, 2 side. Different strokes for different folks.

Well, those suggesting CH4 were spot-on.

I waxed with that, and for the first time the bases weren't worn, nor scratched. I went over all kinds of abrasive surfaces for four days at Jackson Hole.

I didnt get same result with CH6 so I guess CH4 is where it's at.

What is this base grinding and edge sharpening you speak of?

You should move to the east coast where the snow is soft and plentiful...

108 underfoot and 1.5 base for me as well. Some people think it feels too loose...not me. I've been on 1.5 base for so long now that 1 degree feels noticeably grabby, and grabby feels sketchy and unstable.

I think there's possibly another factor here and that's the effect of ski width on the angle a file guide will produce. The file guide will produce a more acute angle on a 110 width ski than on a 65...think about it. So really that 1 degree file guide designed for race skis isn't giving you 1 degree on some wider platform...which is likely why going to the 1.5 makes sense if you're skiing big skis. Just a hypothesis...but I think you could do the trigonometry and it would show something to that effect.

What? No. The edge guide's width doesn't change.

    Geometry is hard.

    tuning skis is hard.

The width of the ski (or snowboard) is irrelevant to a proper base bevel guide if you use a base edge guide that is relative to a flat base and the edge on the side you are tuning.

Yeah, I guess good tools mitigate the whole thing. I've been using the same old ass file guides since racing in the 90s and I haven't really kept up with new shit. My bad.

stiiiiiiill shouldn't make a difference, unless they used some weird-ass tools in the 90's.

jesus fucking christ. The file guides everyone used to use back in ancient times slid over a standard mill bastard file and ran along one edge of the ski forming the specified angle.

This thread is fucking stupid. Tuning is not that difficult. Jesus fucking christ.

It really isn't. But try a shorter file.

That's a stupid guide. It would change the angle all down the ski.
