Looking for a tele-zoom for my Nikon...what do I buy.
I'm looking for something in the 70-200 to 300mm range for my D600. I've been out of the zoom game for a while, and have no idea what to look for.
What should I buy, keeping the price under $2k? f/2.8 is a must.

The Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR II can be had on Ebay under your price cap. Were you looking for something else? Use it with the very good TC 1.4 teleconverter to get close to your 300mm goal but at f4.
Nikon doesn't make a tele-zoom that goes out to 300 with f2.8 aperture, you'd have to get a 300mm prime which would cost $$$.
Curious - why the necessity for f2.8? The D600 has excellent high ISO performance and should produce very clean images up to iso 800. Nikon makes some excellent f4 lenses that are smaller and more affordable also.

Inexpensive-go with the sigma 70-200mm f2.8 in the OS or non OS version. These are very reasonably priced.
I tried out some Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VI lenses back when I was shooting on a crop body and found them to be softer than the VII version. The VII is stellar on my D600's. I would also consider the 70-200mm f4 if it is razor sharp at f4. Even with the 70-200mm f2.8 I find myself stopping down to 3.2 or 3.5 quite a bit except in low light, then I'll open it up all the way. The VII also takes the 1.4 TC very well and the 2.0 TCIII reasonably well.
The 80-200mm f2.8 is another inexpensive option though I have no experience with it. Not a whole lot of choices in that focal range.
The new 300mm f4 VR is looking to be a killer lightweight option with some TC's.

Anyone have feedback on the 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6?

Won't be as sharp as something like the 70-200 f2.8 or 300 f4. Distortion issues (if you care about that). If you can live without the sharpness of the pro level 70-200 or 300 f4 and the slower aperture, then it's a fine lens.
I'm talking about the existing 300 f4, the new one might be even better. The most recent 300 f4 is super sharp, as you would expect a prime to be.
