Reviews are out. Everyone likes it. Serious critics feel obliged to point out its one big flaw: the film is mostly setting the table for the half dozen films Disney must make to recoup the 4 billion it spent obtaining the franchise and start making profits. Between the copious references to the past films and setting up the next films, a number of critics (who enjoyed the film) said it doesn't really stand alone as a story and thus, they place it below New Hope and Empire on the totem pole (some say its not even as good as Jedi). Everyone agrees that despite it being a Disney production, its significantly "less Disney" than where Lucas took it to with Ewoks. Heaps of praise being given for casting actors who can act and using a director who actually knows what to do with them. Patton Oswalt liked it, that's probably all we need to know.

Disney is saying they're expecting to make 3B+ on this movie... it cost almost 400M to make and market. I remember being a little shocked at the sticker price for the franchise, but when every nerd in the country and worldwide runs out to drop $20 on an Imax ticket (and then the next 4+).... it's fucking peanuts.

Advanced sale tickets have already topped $100 million. Add the merchandise (2+ aisles of toys at Target) and shitheads like me who spent $99 for the original 6 blueray pack and $400 million is well within reach.
Told my son I'd pay him $20 if he dresses up in a Star Trek outfit when he goes.

Is there any plot to speak of? Didn't look like it from the trailer.

We have the whole family in town for early X-Mas. We got advance tix about 2 weeks ago. There are 12 of us going. The kids are all dressing up. I am considering it, you know, for the kids.
Movie is at 1:50. I plan on getting there at 12:00 to get decent seats, hopefully together.
I had one rule for this-NO IMAX 3-D, not for the first one. I told the kids we can go later to see it in 3-d.

Actually, that's the main gripe I'm seeing; that it has a very familiar plot. JJ pulled another Star Trek style reboot where he just scrambles the original instead of writing truly new stuff. Primarily a recycle/mash-up of New Hope and Empire's elements. Another orphan with unknown powers from a desert planet. Another cute droid with with secret information. Another cowboy with a spaceship. Another conflicted bad guy in black with a face mask. Another goose stepping imperial admiral. Another immense planet killing space weapon. Another light saber duel on another catwalk. Another character with secret parentage. etc. etc. More than one review is calling out Disney for playing it safe and essentially remaking New Hope. But, even the critics who say its basically nonstop fan service say it is very well done and entertaining, even if you recognize that it is woefully unoriginal at its core. That is what you get with JJ Abrams. A guy who idolizes Spielberg but doesn't have Spielberg's respect for the audience, his originality or his willingness to take risks.

Driving up to West Yellowstone tomorrow to see it in the Jellystone Imax rather than suffer through our tiny local screen or the insufferable Idaho Falls movie crowds.

I was trying to avoid spoilers until my coworker posted it on facebook, then exclaimed it out loud. I'm bummed. I did draw a sharpie penis on his nordic ski. Still excited, but less so.

Typical JJ Abrams frantic style, wish there was a tad more down time for both us and the characters to soak things in like the originals.
Otherwise job well done.
Oh and John Williams taking his original music concepts and adding 40 years of experience and genius to them was absolutely brilliant.Last edited by snapt; 12-19-2015 at 08:12 AM.
