Rumor has it that the reason the autoroad started clearing so early this year is that they anticipate taping the skier market. I say give em lots of business and we may get earlier opens. Personally, I'm not that interested in hiking for turns once I have to down hike more that 1000 vert.

Yeah I wonder why the cog hasn't been doing ski trains. They have been open for two weeks. I know they claim liability but the autoroad doesn't seem to have that issue.

^ That was shut down years ago by the Forest Service:

(BTW, my understanding -- however shakily based -- is that the heli op didn't run very often. And as for the heli op at Greek Peak, although the plans to develop the "back bowls" were well publicized, I don't think the heli skiing every happened.)

Is anyone up in the dacks or whites able to comment on the skeeters and black flies? Thinking about lakes.

Black flies are emerging as fast as the leaves around here. 20' up on a deck with a good wind blowing didn't deter them. Only seen a couple of skeets so far but expect them to cloud up by the weekend.

I haven't found been found by either in the Whites or Western Maine yet. We've been dealing with a different kind of flying critter.

Black flies hate me, or, rather, they hate my cigars. I hate DEET, but I do like hand rolled stogies.

Not the Whites, but more southern/central NH is pretty variable. Went over to Pawtuckaway last week and got demolished by black flies. Last weekend at Bear Brook hardly saw any.

Black fly season - mother's day to father's day. Keep moving, stay in at dusk, wear light colored clothes, and carry cortisone cream.

Mosquitos don't start biting for a few weeks and last to around July 4th.

just had light freeze in the valleys of northern Vermont. Hopefully killed some of them. Most places not many biting bugs yet though but hopefully this killed some of them.

False. Those little fuckers stick around until the first freeze in the fall.

ML, my bud said the bugs aren't bad at the house (which is right on north end of the lake). He didn't get a chance to get out on the boat or in the backwoods though since he was just stopping by on his way to Burlington to check on things.

Beautiful evening at Killington, and looks like more of the same tomorrow for the first full day of Slackfest.

For those looking for lift served, here is my weekly post.

MSS is done. Finished in a light drizzle last Sunday. Hard to spin when it's cloudy with a risk of showers and t-storms all weekend.

Killington is still hoping for June 1, but it hard to tell this time of the season.

    Here is this week's post,

Nice snow conditions in Airplane today, very low skier numbers considering the road was open...
