Whos getting a Walmart checking account?

    Sounds pretty good.
he account, to be branded GoBank, will include a MasterCard debit card and checking. There will be no minimum balance fees, overdraft charges or monthly fees as long as customers have $500 or more placed in the account through direct deposit.

Might as well. I love Walmart.

Pork shoulder, beer, ammo, dog food, and lingerie all in one place of business. America.

We're all getting walmart checking accounts eventually and home loans and car loans and mandated vinyl furniture to go in that house according to the loan and mandated mud flaps on your cars.

Does this mean you can immediately withdraw $499? Knowing the people of Walmart there will be a fair number who will do just that.

Humor aside, this will be a huge cost savings for some consumers forced to use payday loan services.

probably yes, but direct deposit means a regular deposit of $500, right? In other words, they'll give you these benefits if you deposit your paycheck there?

Yep. If you're the kind of consumer who gets reamed on overdraft fees and payday lenders, this account could really help you.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like.

I think it's great for those who wouldn't otherwise have a bank account.

But it does sound like a good thing for the people who can't access banking services. So props to Walmart for that.

    A. Fuck Wal-Mart

    B. Isn't this comparable to most everyone else, eg Chase

    C. Go with a local Credit Union.

    D. I don't know if they still offer it, but one of my accounts is with Schwab. It's "investor checking" - they pay all ATM fees and international currency conversions at ATM's. It's free. And, again, they REIMBURSE ALL ATM fees. It's underwritten by BoA. So, you can kind of justify having it by saying to yourself, "Every time I take money out I'm putting the bill to BoA." And, it's free.

edit: They still have it. It's ridiculously useful if you travel internationally. But even if you don't, fucking hell of a deal.

Obviously, as a member of the bourgeoisie, you don't empathize with the plight of the proletariat. The $8.95 monthly fee on the Walmart checking account, while high for the prvileged class such as yourself, provides free overdraft protection, which I suspect for you is secured by your ipo allocation of Alibaba shares in your Schwab One account.

Bahaha. Too true. For real though, I invest nothing with Schwab, just use that account when I need cash domestically and internationally. My main CU account has FREE overdraft protection, all I have to do is link it to a savings account and keep $25 in it. I also live quite an ascetic lifestyle and make a teacher's salary, I would wager most people on this board make at least 2x what I do, but I try to be smart and frugal - so, yeah... I don't ever worry about needing overdraft, I did have to buy food and a lot of other things on credit when the economy tanked around 09-10 though. That was a rough time.

Edit Shit: Actually I remember now I accidentally paid for a DH bike with Paypal with the wrong account and it did overdraft once and it was like $35. I stand corrected. Still, who plans on over-drafting every month? Live in your car or something to save money or get a girlfriend. I did.

I will not be getting a walmart debit card because walmart is a fucked up company and is part of what is wrong with this country.

all of you assholes who buy cheap made in china shit from walmart instead of paying a little tiny bit more from local retailers have fucked this country. also the fact that walmart wont pay a living wage.

man fuck wal mart only few times ive been in there all I see is fat people and the most horribly standard American fatass stupid republican idiots.

Hugh, I'm the farthest thing from a yuppie, and I never espoused that Chase is better than Wal-Mart, everything is bullshit, I'm just playing the game as best I can and reducing my footprint as much as possible.

You cats realize that wally world isn't just some super agency that hates the world right??? Go to Bentonville and get gas... You're probably buying at a Walmart. Buying smokes? Yup, walmart. Everything is fucking walmart in middle America. May as well just spring for the free money you're likely to get as long as it's financially possible to do so. Just like how I pay for everything on my CC w/1.5% cash back.

You've got to have one single (dead) braincell to think Walmart is worth walking into.

28 percent of U.S. households — more than 68 million adults — do not have a checking account or simply rely on alternative financial services. More than 1 in 4 U.S. households are unbanked or "underbanked" - those who use money orders, payday lenders and check cashers - according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. The agency estimates the unbanked market at $169 billion annually.

How do people in the cash economy utilize direct deposit? $500 is a lot of money to maintain at all times for a good portion of the population and is only required to waive monthly fees on the basic Walmart checking account.

"Bankrate.com reported in 2012 that 28 percent of American families have no savings. Another 20 percent don't have enough saved to cover even three months' worth of living expenses, while just 43 percent have enough in savings to cover three months of expenses."

Maybe dips below 500 on any payout not to Walmart can get fined. Going under your 500 for your stock up trip at wally world? OK. Not sure, just spitballing ideas.

I would pay more fees and drive further to not have to deal with wallyworld. Like someone mentioned,m support a local credit union, your dollars wil stay in your community this way.

There is so much wrong with walmart in the US and Canada. However, we (consumers) are the idiots that keep supporting them. I thought walmart was introduced to showcase the great products that were made in the USA. Someone must have changed the mission statement in the past to showcase shitty products made in China, rip off americans, and bully towns into giving them tax breaks on stores to "employ" local workers. It's time to stop supporting China and time for americans to be willing to pay a little more to support their own, made in usa or made in canada, economy. We've only shot ourselves in the foot and welcomed the chinese shit products in with open arms. It's not getting better before it gets worse.
