    Fancy mail order foods?

Eating Anson Mills antebellum coarse white grits this morning for breakfast. Up till now I haven't been a big online food shopper, but these grits are game changers (and I grew up eating grits multiple times a week in the deep south). It's got me thinking, what else am I missing out on? Skool me on ridiculously expensive, but totally worth it, mail order foodstuffs. I have a high speed internet connection and a shiny AmEx card at the ready.

I'm damned tempted to order me some of these: but not sure I need 10 lbs, and the shipping is kind of a bitch too.
Got hooked on Jordan's Reds when I lived in VT, but think they went belly-up, or they're just not available out west. Boar's Heads are good, but they're the wrong color dammit.

Not trying to call bullshit on you guys, but can you be a little more specific? What have you ordered? What did you love? What was worth the cash because it is either not available or so far superior to the locally available stuff that the exponential price increase was justified? What wasn't?

For instance, the antebellum coarse white grits at Anson Mills are so totally different and so far superior to the Quaker crap and the Bob's Red Mill (all that's available here at the market) that it is worth spending upwards of $60 for 10# of them. Cooked overnight in my zojirushi with 2/3 water and whole 1/3 milk it is simply extraordinary. The farro piccolo, on the other hand, is delicious but probably not worth the cost to me at this point since I haven't really found a way to use it that I prefer to other locally available items.

Have you had the excellence that is Benton's ham? Blackberry Farm (google if you don't know) made it famous and it is worth every ever lovin penny. Pork products the way the animal was meant to be

That jowl bacon looks slick! Might have to try that. Was perusing the Bentons site not too long ago as well. Does the country ham require any special preparation? Or just warm it in a low oven and then get after it?

Get the bacon, the ham is salty as hell FYI. Ham is easy to cook, some rinse it in water before cooking, that'll take some of the bite out of it but other than that it's just the same. My family lake house is about 10 minutes from Mr. Benton's shop. Usually stock up about $200 worth of goods when I get back there.

Check out http://www.bellabellagourmet.com/ for poultry and foie gras. Every bit as good. I like their duck products better than dartagnan. Less expensive too. The meats come from here http://www.labellefarms.com/index.html

Foods are fridge temp when unpacked, great quality.

Do not cook the ham. Treat it like the aged, air-and salt cured pork treat that it is. You can simply slice it thin, just as you would a prosciutto and eat it as-is. It's different than an Italian model in that the Scott hams one has a good bit of smoke on it as well as the salt cure, but it is absolutely delicious just as it comes.

Hatch chiles--fresh or frozen. Pricey but worth it. Around here we're mostly stuck with Anaheims, although the truckee safeway did have Hatch chiles for a week or so. I've been ordering seeds and growing them down in Sacramento but I'm getting too lazy.

The guy at the northwest corner of the sunday market sometimes has hot new mexico-style chiles, but not every year. I should try the coop next time I'm down there.
