We need to show this at the Orpheum here in Flagstaff. It could be a good fund raising party for our trails here. Let me know what steps to take to make that happen Ryan. Thanks.

For sure RA! I'd say keep that in the back of your mind for now... I think once our tour crew is done with the Higher & Almost Ablaze tours... likely after Christmas... they'll start planning for the unReal tour, which I assume will start in June. Would love to make it happen though!

Jerry Remy's in Boston has been doing other bike movie premieres the past few summers, but its kinda painfully sterile in there. Plenty of other options in the area, but be sick to have something in Boston too.

Am I the only one who thought this was a stupid movie? Night riding stupid, Glacier riding stupid, grizzly bear chase stupid, scaring wild horses stupid, 100riders on a ski hill stupid, brown pow stupid.
The only scene missing was a mountain bike jump over a shark. Maybe that got cut out.
Have mountain biking movies run out of ideas? or just does everything that TGR touches turn to suck? There was some good production value, but most of it was wasted on stupid shit.
The best thing about the movie was Semenuk's segment that genuinely kicked ass, and was awesome. Why couldn't the whole movie be like that? If it had it would have been truly a revolutionary piece of work. Instead it was one single good 'nugget' padded by 90minutes of pure masturbation that took itself way too seriously, while pretending not to. Whoever wrote the "miner" cut scene nugget 'pun' must have known this consciously or subconsciously. It makes total sense now.
The irony was while trying to break the cliche of mtb filmmaking it made a fool of itself, embracing every ossified TGR ski film cliche out there to an annoying extreme. And if we're going there, why couldn't the athletes have been bank robbers, secret agents, or something exciting and entertaining, instead of white collar, blue collar, working class stiffs, cripples, and degenerates for god's sake? The whole TGR athletes in disguise cliche is played out enough; pissing on the urban under-class only adds to the movie's obnoxious pretense.
The whole idea of nature and/or mtb'ing being a contrast to the 'boring' city life, is a farce too, as there is nothing 'natural' in the riding or the 'nature' shots in this film. It might as well have been filmed in front of a blue screen. The filmmaking 'stunts' were so out there too, that any resemblance of stoke that you'de get by watching grade B bike porn was completely absent. None of it looked fun, even if you could imagine yourself doing that shit. Even the athletes 'stoke' seemed forced and artificial. Skidding down on rock hard, sun pocked, runneled, glacier ice, holding on for dear life is just not fun. (fist pump!) I just scared the shit out of a pack of wild horses "Woo Hoo!" I just pretended to be chased and eaten by a grizzly bear in a movie, on my bike "Yeah!" Who the hell wants to do any of those things?
Whoever thought of the idea for this film was high on cocaine and it shows. TGR take note; your movie sucked, please do not make another MTB film ever again.Last edited by TheMessenger; 06-25-2015 at 04:33 PM.

Went to the Vancouver world premier, drank beers, cheered at the screen when rad shit happened and was entertained. Rode the Whistler Bike Park the following weekend and all was well.
Semenuk's segment, Tom Van Steenbergen's front flip and the Squamish trial segment (can't think of who it was) were highlights that I remember.
Agree some of the stuff was overdone, but it's a mtn bike movie, I take it as seriously as a ski movie.

Overall I thought it was above average. Sure, some of it was cheesy and overdone, but like ^^^ said, it's a mountain bike movie.
The segment at "The Ranch" where the rider switches between dirt jump and DH bikes half-way through... that was one of the best bike movie segments I've ever seen.

I watched the trailer and thought it wasn't my kinda flick, so I haven't seen it. But complaining about TGR movies is like complaining about Warren Miller movies: they have a formula created for an audience that consistently makes them money, so why change? Especially when you read comments here about how people just want to "drink beers, cheer at the screen when rad shit happened and be entertained". Not exactly a high bar to achieve when working with the worlds best riders. Not trying to rip on TGR here, I think I'm somewhat defending them technically? Ha. They always have a section or two in any movie they've done that is impressive and well done.

Wow. Who brought in Silky Johnson? Ha!
This is going to sting. I've never been one to bite my tongue. Maybe I'll learn one day...
My biggest problem is this: TGR making a bike film is like Jeff Brines making a surf film. I may think surfing is rad but I don't know the sport well enough to jump in and make top notch surf porn. Sure, if you give me enough RED/Phantom/RAD CAMERA equipment, enough post production resources, I'll still put something together that stokes out the crowd. But your uber passionate surfers will complain that I missed the mark. They'll complain I don't get the sport. And they'd be right. Unless I'm telling a story, in which case I'd be an expert storyteller, not porn film maker - I would have no business dabbling in the surf world.
Not my words but sums it up really well... http://theteamrobot.blogspot.com/201...ilmmaking.html
"Maybe the reason these videos feel like boring self-important snoozefests to the viewer is because they were boring self-important snoozefests during the creative process, on site, and during post-production. Maybe the reason I, as a rider, am miserable watching these films is because the riders were miserable making them.
If you want a mountain bike video that doesn't suck, stop trying so hard. Find a good rider, find some trails he likes, and then point a camera (any camera) at him riding. The Brannigan Queenstown video is at 165,000 views already. I know that no mountain bike filmmaker would want to have their name associated with the extremely low production value or non-existent formal qualities of the Brannigan video, and that's exactly why all of the current crop of mountain bike filmmakers should be taken out back and shot. The Brannigan video made people happy, it made people want to go ride, and it made people appreciate bike riding more. If you can't get behind the video because the resolution was low, the light was brackish, or because the guys filming had shaky hands, then you clearly love filmmaking more than you love mountain biking, and we need fewer people like you, not more.
The point of visual communication is not to demonstrate the medium of visual communication, or to marinate your viewers in the various aspects of the medium or the production process. The medium exists to capture a subject and tell a story. So figure out what your subject is, figure out what story you're trying to tell, and then get out of the way. Like good service, you should be invisible."
What I want is less bird/horse/stunt shots and more ripping riders doing their thing in their environment. People did always complain about Warren Miller but I loved his 90s films because he did that (with exception of the nauseating Jeep commercials).
This movie doesn't suck. Its just frustrating to see this be placed atop the paradigm of mountain bike filmmaking when really its a filmmakers film with a bit of mountain biking in it. It is missing the mark. Its full of stunts and filmmakers showing off more than its filled with real, raw, rad, dudes/dudettes having fun on their bikes riding. It lacks what the sport is really all about. I'm bummed the kids don't have an Earthed/The Circus/Clappin' Yo Dome/Alpha Project film to look up to. That's what the world needs. Raw riding with the world's best riders.
Thank God for Vital Raw.
Out.

TGR's first bike movie, unReal
Let's not forget that Anthill was involved with this....but they might fit into that 'love filmmaking more than mountain biking' category. It's all been downhill since The Collective. One could argue they are to blame for the onslaught of overdone, skid filled, freeride flicking, twitchy handlebar, 'loam porn' that dominates PB. Don't get me started on the rebirth of Kranked 2 scree skidding....
x 1million.
Cranky old guy, out.
