Drunken Monkey near 5050 was a surprise! The best miso soup we have ever had. "Country style" said the chef. And epic gyoza! Beer selection not epic but ok.

I would recommend that spot. Have never had a bad experience there. Have taken dates there as well as my parents and all have been satisfied. Vets and I have actually had really great uni there, which was surprising. Great staff, too, plus the sushi chefs are cool. I will say that heir sushi menu, at least in terms of the maki rolls, is heavy on the fried combos and spicy combos: if you like your fish fresh and not mixed with sauces, stick with the nigiri or sashimi. That said, it has a wide ranging menu that will appeal to folks who aren't necessarily into sushi., which makes it an easy place to go with a diverse group of eaters. Agree on the beer selection (i.e. small and not spectacular by a long shot), but their custom cocktails always look interesting. Oh yeah, it can get a bit noisey on a busy night.

    SLT food

Classic Cue Bar at the Y has huge, tasty burgers with a pile of fries for like $8.50, good fish tacos too. Nightly specials on grub or beer, lots of pool tables
Jalisco's behind Rojos has the best burrito in town, cheap, fast, friendly, cash only. Serves beer too. Limited chips and salsa but good salsa.
Jalisco's by Whiskey Dicks is owned by a family member of the other Jalisco's (the son I believe) and is also quality. Cheap, bring cash, both close early (8:00ish). El pastor is solid.
Jalapeno's on 89 towards Emerald Bay is also good. $4.00 huge breakfast burritos that store well for lunch (get the bacon bf burrito), free flow chips and salsa, salsa could be better but is ok. Best food value in town. I don't recommend Brothers although their tortas are good.

Riva Grill in Ski Run Marina has happy hour specials M-F before 5 (or 6) drink specials and tasty wood fired pizza half off (this is a good damn' deal, no weekends though).
Artemis has a new location in Ski Run marina.
Tahoe Pizza Co on the west end of town is probably the best in town. Old school salad bar too.
Both Thai restaurants are good, not cheap and not fast. Not recommended on weekends unless you're early.
Samurai Sushi has a good happy hour before 5. Lots of stuff half off.
There's lots of mediocre food, not much that is standout, but all of these are acceptable and filling after a day of makin' turns.

So I've decided to make the push much harder into the backcountry this year. I've purchased a beacon, shovel, probe, AT boots, have AT skis and bindings pending. Also purchased some literature and am aiming to take the AIARE Level 1 course in December. I have a little bit of sidecountry experience, but I am very excited to do some turn earning and to really explore some backcountry stuff this year.

I would love to link up with some of you guys for some tours if you'd have me as a tagalong. I'm sure my skinning will be slow at first but the desire is strong and I can hold my own just fine on the descent. Anybody interested in showing me around a bit please send me a PM or something, I also have a pretty decent taste in beer and love to share.

    Right on man.

FYI, I'm one of several speakers at an AIARE / Lake Tahoe Community College Preseason Avalanche Workshop on Saturday 10/18. Brennan Lagasse is presenting as well. From what I understand, it should be a good mix of presentations to help get your head in the right state.

    Yeah man, it went epic!!!!

We did buy the KWonly pass even with it pushing up toward $500. I think gone are the days of sitting on broken chairs for cheap. Now you just need to walk a mile and pay good money to sit on broken chairs.

yeah KW only for me too, they are charging the rest of the balance on my deposit this month, ouch.

Frush you got a KW pass this year?

Dookey, FWIW I thought the Drunken Monkey sucked when we went there a few months ago. It was way better a year or two ago IMHO.

Bummed. Can't make it Saturday but would live to hear what you learned. Any chance of YouTube recording to watch later?

Looking forward to Days of My Youth at Squaw creek on Saturday night, but worried about the smoke from the #kingfire. Anyone been in Olympic valley in the evening these last few days? At least the show is indoors.
    Seen from Sacramento:

The King fire is blowing up big time, halfway to Truckee in just a couple of days, traveled 10 miles in 14 hours and is at French Meadows and Hell Hole Reservoirs right now, another 10 miles or so it will be knocking on Alpine & Squaw's back door.

Fire is being a big dick

Photo taken yesterday by Steve Ellsworth

And the biggest dick of all appears to be this guy.

    BREAKING: ARREST MADE, ARSON SUSPECTED
Man, 37, suspected of starting King Fire; bail set at $10 million
TRUCKEE, Calif. — A man has been arrested on suspicion of deliberately setting the King Fire.
Wayne Allen Huntsman, 37, has been charged with arson. He is being held in El Dorado County Jail on $10 million bail.
Calfire officials are scheduled to announce the cause of the fire at a press conference at 11:30 a.m., according to reports.

Yeah. With his priors, pretty sure he's death penalty-eligible if somebody dies as a result of this thing.

Holy Imman idiot! I've visited many of the past threadz, but never noticed the resource postings on the first page! (I never get stoked this early in the season, either.) Great stuff and can't wait to put this in my porn rotation from Nov-May! Probably will use much less bandwidth than the videos that I drool over during the warmer months! This fire has been completely the suck, looking forward to hopefully a couple of days of clear(er) skies in Truckee with the change in wind direction...
