My bloody boot (the second set of staples up from the ankle on the previous pic is where the bone came out and you can see from the blood stain on my boot how twisted my leg was in my boot)..........

Holy crap!

That looks hauntingly familiar. No feeling like looking at your leg and thinking "fuck man, that ain't my leg...that belongs on a dead man". No pics here, I wanna forget. So you're getting the screws taken out soon? I've got to too, although no time set. I'm a really lean (read: skinny as fuck) guy and the heads of the screws are clearly visible now that the swelling has gone down...lovely, can't wait.

I exploded my entire arm years ago and they decided to take out the plate and screws and what not. First day back out skiing I hit a midwest booter and would have been better off trying to land on hockey skates( ice landing). Either way 4 operations later the hardware is back in my arm again and that's where it will stay forever. Be careful about letting the holes heal back up, give em time to fill in so they are bombproof.. good luck

Dang dude. You had it bad. My break was pretty similar, except i didnt quite go all the way through, But it did leave a stretch mark/blister where it came as close as it could to poking. also, I have same rod/screws in the same place but they didnt staple the wound back together, they used internal stiches that desovled. the second set of staples where the screws are right?

Assuming the work was done at Mammoth Hospital you're in good hands. If so who was the Doc?
Good luck getting back out there.
I got my stiches out yesterday and our 2006 Mammoth Season Passes were in the mailbox when we got home - you gotta love irony like that..

Duker......the screws are at the ankle and the knee. Two sets of two at the ends of the rod.
Mtn Man......the screws aren't coming out. They are in for good unless I have some sort of complication down the road.
As for everyones well wishes thank you!!!!! I've been walking with no assistance now for about 4 weeks and I'm back on the bike and doing light jogging. PT is going great, its the highlight of my week. I just got told I could join the gym by my house and do further workouts on weight machines on my own. I have a doc appointment on June 3rd in Mammoth (any of you gonna be in town that weekend). I should be getting cleared to go back to work then so I'm stoked about that.If you open a second beer and don't miss a beat between sips, is that two beers or just one 24 ouncer? -Tye 1on

Glad to hear the recovery is going well - what's the timeframe for full recovery? Best of luck with the biking and strength-building!!!

06-01-2005, 11:30 PM #20Possibility I'll ski groomers on the 4th of July this year at Mammoth. I'll know this weekend. Said it will take a year roughly from the break to be back to my full physical strenght and about a year and a half before I "forget" I broke it. Unfortunately when I broke it I did permanant damage to the lymphatic, capillary and nervous systems down there so I will deal with swelling and wierd sensation to touch most likely for the rest of my life the doc said. Thanks again everybody!!!!!!!

Thats crazy that You did some major nervous damage. I have a little bit on the outside of my knee but thats from where the incision from surgery was made.
Do you think you'll ever get the rod out?www.skithebeav.com

So went to the doc's in Mammoth last weekend and I'm ready to go. Got realeased to ski, bike, run, work and pretty much everything else. For skiing i have to stick to groomers and for biking I am limited to x-country but he said all is well. I'm moving back as of Saturday June 11 so look me up if you guys are in town.
Unless it is causing me pain or I have complications down the road the rod will stay in for life.

So I finally got internet again and I'm once again couch ridden. I managed to be super rad and scorpion on my bike (over the bars and then get hit by the bike) and hairline fracture my tibia dead nuts where I broke it before. In addition I did something to my meniscus that is yet to be determined completely. So I'm couch ridden for a week or so and my bike needs a new wheel and rear derailer.
