    Katana in 177 or 184

I currently ski 184 katanas on powder days in the resort and I love them.

In backcountry,i ski 180 bonafides, and they are great, except:

In medium density powder, 18" or do, narrow (3m or so ) steep couloirs, I find them difficult to ski, primarily because I can't slide the end of the turn, to put them across the fall line.
With the katanas, similar conditions in the resort, no problem.

So, I've been thinking of buying.a pair of 177 katanas, mount them with dynafits for powder said in the backcountry.

I'm considering the 177 to save some weight. They will be similar in weight to the bonafides.

    Question:

I've not skied shorter skis, and I'm wondering if the 177 katanas will still slide around to finish the turn like the 184s, or will they sink too much in powder.

The katanas I'm talking about are the original, metal ones.

I know about the carbon ones, but I still like the feel of metal skis.

    Thanks for reading.

Based on my experiences, yes, the 177 Katana will work better. It has more to do with rocker/camber profile and lack of sidecut, than it does the length. Maybe consider a Blizzard Scout/Cochise as well? (or other similar designs)

Thanks, I was (am) worried if the 177 would give me enough float, I weigh 180lbs

It should. At 170-175lbs, I run a true 178 in a similar profiled ski that's only 120-102-107 and can float fine. It doesn't quite feel like a megawide, but it floats and slarves fine in the deep, as long as you have at least a decent pitch.
