Knife question for the chefs here

Anybody use a magnetic knife strip on the wall to store knives? Are they safe for the knives?

No. They become magnetized and start to point north.

You're supposed to use the side of the knife on the magnet Benny.

only if you are clumsy putting them on or off the strip. If you are careful the honed sharp edge shouldn't even touch the mag strip.

If magnetic stripes nick the edges of your knife you probably shouldn't be allowed to own knives

the knives are always handy, off the counters, not in drawers ...works for me

They are safe for the knives unless (until) you accidentally bump the handle and knock them off the strip. At that point, there's a pretty good chance of damaging the knife and yourself (and any bystanders). Had this happen a couple of times and decided to switch to a knife block.

Been using these at 2 different homes over the past 10y and works extremely well. I don't think I've ever accidentally knocked a knife off the magnet, but it is positioned such that it will not be subject to unnecessary traffic...

Good. Just want to free up as much counter space as possible.

I had two of these in my old apartment with with about eight knives on each one. Never had a problem. It really helped clean up my limited counter space up (also hung all kitchen tools on hooks), looked bad ass when I had company over, and was overall safer because I didn't have to set a dirty knife back down on the counter for someone to accidentally cut themselves on. I wish I had somewhere to put them up in my new kitchen, but counter space (or drawer space for that matter) is not an issue in the new place.
All I know is that I don't know nothin'... and that's fine.

Or build something like this. Takes up less wall space.

If it's just dry wall you can stab your own slots in the wall...and its really easy to fix if you ever sell, Benny.

watch out for the studs though. Use a beacon to find them before you start in stabbin shit.

Make the slots deep, and you can double-up. Took a few hours to make; it's worked well for over 20 years.
