    Hand injury from the MTB

Crashed hard 5.5 weeks ago on the bike. Saw a doc, they suspected scaphoid fx. Pair of X-rays 10 days apart both came back negative. Been treating it as a sprain since then. Most pain has been on little finger side of hand. Trying to get back to usual activities, but still having some intense pain with weight bearing on the hand. Can't even lean on a counter top or do girl push-ups without pain in my palm. Wondering if maybe I have an undiagnosed hamate fx, based on pain location. Have a call in with an ortho. Anyone ever deal with anything like this before? Tips? The biggest thing concerning me is the lack of weight bearing ability right now...

Seeing an ortho tomorrow at 8am. Leaving for 2 weeks of skiing in Argentina on July 28. Hoping that if I do need surgery, it can wait until after that.

I did about the exact same thing about the same time ago.

I have constant pain in tip of thumb like I hit it with a hammer about an hour ago and shoulder blade/neck pain after riding.

    Seeing Doc tmw.

No fracture. Still painful. Have a friend who is a PA who is encouraging me to get an MRI, though I may hold on that for a few weeks. Hoping for some improvement soon.

My employer has a Dr specializing in alternative treatments - acupuncture, massage etc run a free clinic two days a week.

He stuck the needles in me, heat lamp and massage... feels just superb now a couple of hours later, best it has in a month way better than being on advil and ice has been able to manage.

I was sceptical .... but those chinese needles sure seem work.

PNWBrit: I used an excellent hand surgeon in Lynnwood, WA when I tore my radio-scapho-capitate ligament two seasons ago. Shoot me a PM if you want his info.

I fractured my hammate hook 4 or 5 years ago mtn biking. Went through the whole process with an MRI etc. Basically had to take it easy for about 6 weeks then another 3-4 weeks of getting strength back and had mild pain if I pushed it just right for the next 1.5-2 years. Its still actually broken in there but it doesn't cause me any pain at this point. Doc said he could do surgery if need be, but having a little bone floating around in there isn't any sort of issue. In the end, the dr. did absolutely nothing for treatment. That said, I had it diagnosed etc. and it could be something different.

    Thanks.

Second acupuncture session this morning. Haven't needed to take any advil since first appointment last week. Pain greatly reduced, in fact almost disappeared. So hopefully it's nothing structural that'll need a hand surgeon.

That's great. Haven't had much luck with acupuncture myself. Maybe I should give it a shot on some nagging injuries.

Hand surgeons at my hospital feel like surgery is likely unwarranted for hook of the hamate fx's. It sounds likely from your description. MRI is the only way to know. As previously mentioned, 3-4 weeks off of the injury.

    Similar experience

I went over the bars on my bike and fell on my outstretched hand. I went to the hospital for x-rays and they were negative for a fracture. I went to physio about a week later. Both the Dr. And the physio treated me for a sprain. 6 weeks later I still can't put pressure on my palm under the baby finger or squeeze anything - like the gas pump - unless I don't use my ring finger and baby finger. I went to see my family dr. and he immediately suspected a hamate fracture. I went for more x-rays including a tunnel view. This showed something that caused the radiologist to request a CT scan of my wrist. Will let you know the outcome.
