    The Lager Appreciation Thread

The microbrew movement in the U.S. is dominated by ales, but there are some damn good lagers out there that tend to get lost in the mix. I'll admit probably 90% of the beer I drink is top-fermented, but I try to balance things out by drinking lagers from time to time.

That said, what are your favorite lagers? I had one yesterday I thought was exceptional: Pelican Brewing's The Governor. It's a maibock that clocks in at 7% alcohol. A delicious brew!

not a micro, but I am not feeling the Yuengling love that the folks around here are, now that it is widely distributed. Ice cold with nothing else around, sure. But as a go to lager, not for me.

Blackfoot Brewing in Helena MT makes a great steam lager. They have it on tap slopeside at Moonlight Lodge.

On the West coast, Lagunitas, Anchor and Gordon Biersch make pretty good Pilsners. Tough to beat Urquell or Staropramen, especially on draft

I'll give you the Staropramen, but Budvar >>> Urquell.

Another good lager available slopeside in Big Sky is Black Star Lager from Great Northern Brewing in Whitefish MT. Scissorbills has it in bottles, and Andiamos has it on tap.

Drank a lot of fine lager on tap from a local brewery last time I was in Jackson Hole--maybe the Snake RIver Brewery but I'm not sure.

I will give the benefit of the doubt to Urquell when consumed at point of origin, however, when I have consumed it in the US, I couldn't tell if I was drinking skunk piss or pilsner. I have consumed Budvar a lot closer to, but not at, the source and liked it. I prefer dark lagers greatly over pale lagers. I have two bottles of Köstritzer Schwarzbier left from my trip. No pics.

    Snake River Lager. It's solid.

Blackfoot's steam beer is good; I'd call the style more of a hybrid than a true lager. (Yes, I know they call it a lager, but this is the internet so I'm allowed to have an opinion and post about it.)

Great Lakes Eliot Ness. So tasty. So smooth.

Almost forgot: Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest. Wish I could get my hands on this one more often.

Tough to find local places that do he lagers I really like. I am a big fan of dark lages like dopplebock, Schwartz and well made Baltic Porters. The lager yeast really adds cool components o all three of those styles.

The Oktoberfest Lager is not sold in N. America. Their more popular (and famous) Oktoberfest-Märzen is readily available tho.

That said Augustiner's is the best O-Fest beer IMHO.

Texas has a pretty strong German influence and the micro brewers are doing a pretty damn good job on some of the german style lagers lately. Franconia brewing in Dallas has pretty damn good Pils and dunkle. God forbid you actually have to spend time in Dallas, but getting fucked up on Franconia's beer is a good way to sooth the pain. (There's actually several good breweries doing good beer in the area but the best lager is Franconia).

I wish Prima Pils wasn't so damn expensive.

If we're going to include the pilsner end of things then I'm going to say that Pacifico is my go-to for beer...always.

We've got a few local breweries doing some great lagers, but September is when it really gets good. Can't wait for the Marzens and Oktoberfests.

For the mass produced I've always liked the Staropramen. Czech Pilsners are my favorite and I hope to tour a few breweries when I visit next year.

Or, bottom of the barrel, Lucky Lager.

I'm a lager fan, my favourite beer at one time was OK spring lager. It was discontinued and I was cast out among a plethora of pilsners, ales, bitters and the like. I still have not found my new go to lager.

Have you tried Session by Full Sail? I think it's a damn good basic pale lager. Nothing fancy, but tasty and refreshing.
