next sl! sweet! that's on the list after the pedals, so looking at saving g's as well, so you have me thinking about those mag crampons. that and I'm liking my bike in the low/slack position fairly often but pedal strikes climbing thru rough/roots had me initially thinking slimmer pedal/shorter crank arms and the bikes been so fun I want to take it on the lift some. next sl's and those mags have to be atleast a lb over my xt/ dx setup. currently at 32.5 and not sure about carbon rims. be interested in feedback from those crampons

Do it. Good god is that bb smoooooth. Didn't know that cranks and a bb could make so much difference. And this is coming from a guy is who has run Chris King, Shimano, previous race face, and a bunch of other higher end bb and crank combos. The cranks are spectacular. Light, bomber, stiff, sexy.
If I put a Pike on it, my 2013 Slayer 70 with a dropper would be 29#. Keeping the Lyrik as I still ride a a bunch of lift served (I have seasons passes to a couple of places and they will easily pay for themselves). If I wasn't riding lift served, I'd have the Pike.
29# for a bike that downs like my old TR250 and ups better than my old 2009 cross country bike (ETSX 70). It would weight 10 pounds less than my TR250 and it would weigh 1 pound more that my ETSX, and arguably ride equal to or better than either of those.
Currently waiting for the Charger damper to be available as an insert for my current Lyrik (same as the boxxer damper). This gets me to 29.5# with a killer light, lift-worthy bomber build.Last edited by iscariot; 07-01-2014 at 04:03 PM.

nice. I heard they spin like crazy. my vengeance hlr is 5.4lbs so there's a lb but I'd like to be close to 30.going to have to wait for more work/dough. that's awesome , your slayer is basically the same weight as a 10g carbon nomad with pedals. don't think i'll get there but I plan on having this bike for a while. almost tempted to sell the dh bike its soo capable....almost

Yah. When you mount the cranks and bb (unfortunatley only a 2 beer job, one to install and one to admire you work), if you lightly brush against the cranks, like I accidentally did, they'll do a few laps on their own. I've never seen anything like it.
As for the Nomadc comparison. Not sure its warranted as I'm running the stock Continental Mountain King 2.4. It is 90% the DHF/DHR combo I usually run. The Conti is great on the ups (ie. doesn't feel like I'm climbing with a parachute open like with the Maxxis), but I would like that extra10% (mostly the drift and hook up as you roll into a corner) that the 2# extra (plus its rotational) a DHF/DHR combo would give.

Realistically, under 32# or so gets bucked around in the rough stuff a bit, and its sometimes better to have a bit of weight to hold the line you chose.
If I went to carbon rims (thinking about light bikes) it would drop a few grams more, and to paraphrase kidwoo, you could tensions the ever loving shit out of them, and get a retarted stiff wheel with a bit of a weight loss too. That plus tubless and a pike would get me to 29# for sure, or maybe even 28# 15 oz.
If that happens, I'll take the NomadC comparisons all day long.

ya thinking if I get a 650b setup next yr try those lightbikes w aerolites on hopes. still just thinking. heard some good reports and they're not stupid expensive. let the masses sort that out first . first pedals then cranks. keep the 26's for the heavier setup. wonder whats the weight difference between next and turbines
suggested the slayer to a buddy last yr. he's pretty stoked. his trance has been relegated to "the wifes bike"

Yah. I've said it many times...the slayer rules. Totally off the radar. Sleeper. Totally underrated.
Also, it fits 650b x 2.2
Nextsl 573g including bb and 32t ring.

Been through moondust, clay slime, mud, and fully submerged, and several hose downs. No creeks yet. FWIW, my slayer runs the threaded version, not the pressfit.
Pressfit can and should go fuck itself. I have pf on my Fatboy and no creeks yet with the stock bb, but its in the back of my mind. Hoping to sell the Spec fb and get an RM blizzard.
As for the durability of nextsl... standby.
Although I was never especially hard on my turbines or saints or xt's or atlas or deus, etc... I don't tend to pound blindly through the tech, I tend to pick fast lines, and at least attempt to pull them off, which I think has helped.
I guess that comes from riding a 6 inch bike and trying/keeping up with racer guys half my age on 8 inch dh rigs.Last edited by iscariot; 07-01-2014 at 08:55 PM.

I've used both the canfield classic and ultimates. The shape takes a little getting used to but you don't notice it after a few weeks. I did not like the open spindle on the classics, it rubs against your shoe when pedalling and sometimes makes an incredibly annoying squeak. Worked well aside from that until the bearings went all poopy and it developed lots of play. The ultimates developed play as well. I am usually too lazy to do any maintenance so I just put my Axiom platforms back on and have been trouble free ever since. The thin profile of the crampons didn't make that much difference with pedal strikes since they are wider than my normal pedals.

This happened on Friday (thankfully on a slight climb):

Showed no obvious signs that they were being worn at all, so I was pretty freakin' surprised when it happened. I can't recall ever smashing them into rocks badly or taking any ankle breaker landings.
Grip was never that great, so not a total loss.
