I guess I don't actually see much of it out on the trails. Sure I read it online...but when tires hit dirt I either just don't notice it or don't come across it.
Lots of nice bikes and Tacoma's (hey wait you got a nice fancy Tacoma...) around the Sea to Sky, I don't automatically assume that people don't deserve them for one reason or another.

Enduro seems to have been the boon companies were looking for. Easily accessible for the "everyman" to get into (way more phun than xcountry, not as skeery as DH) and suddenly people start thinking weight matters again (which, it kind of does with that format). But essentially zero of those yuppies who can afford the lightest will ever be competitive on any level.
That mindset, transitioning from "freeride" to "enduro" or whatever, has the added benefit of shifting the focus from components and designs that favored longevity and plushness to lightness and quickness. Eg, "Back in my day" coils always functioned better and were cheaper than whatever stupid fucking expensive new air fork Fox would dream up, and that's what we wanted - durable and plush. But now with everyone obsessed with the Enduro format companies have taken the opportunity to refocus all consumer attention on the perceived high end that riders "need". I'm sure all of this is too generalized, I'm just cranky about 27.5 and all the other bullshit.
You know what would sell more bikes in the US and make everyone a boatload of money? Creating viable biking options in all metropolitan areas for commuters. But, that will probably take us another 500 years or so - just before or after the desertification of the world.
I also like Pinkbike Buy/Sell. That's all I use that site for."The world is a very puzzling place. If you're not willing to be puzzled you just become a replica of someone else's mind." Chomsky

An overlooked issue is the lack of discount for buying a high end complete. Its actually more expensive than building your own.
Take everyone's favorite $10k Bronson
$2800 Enves
$2800 Frame
$1300 XX1
$850 Fork and headset
$500 Brakes and rotors
$300 Reverb
$120 in rubber
$200 in bars/stem/grips
$50 saddle
$8720?

This thread reminds me that someone needs to buy my bike..... It's too nice to just keep hanging out on Sprocket Rockets. Good deal, too!!

Other than turning product development towards what jewelry the brohlerites want and only what they want, sure....
swine - bike commuting seems to have an inverse relation between price and days commuted. most of the US bikes get trashed commuting; theres plenty of cheap commuter frames out there. the expensive upsold "commuter bike" that sits in the Portland/Vancouver/Seattle home is just a different outfit for the same douchebag.

Yeah, I know I went off comparing apples and oranges a bit. My perspective is all skewed because I just spent time working in Copenhagen recently. But what if everyone commuted like that here, selling millions of cheap commuter bikes wouldn't be bad for business, right? And then there would be many more repair shops and jobs. And then, rainbows and unicorns!

Some US cities are starting to play catch-up with the bike commuting thing. Mostly on the coasts, though. Land use patterns here in flyover country are way too fucked up and sprawly for it to become a good option soon, but striping bike lanes and paving some bike paths is a hell of a lot cheaper than building a new rail line. I expect we'll see slow progress on that front. There's definitely money to be made there for whoever makes the best $500 1x10 commuter bike.
Also:
Know what would be awesome? A service like craigslist or pinkbike classifieds that lets you pay with a credit card and escrow account and transfers the cash out of the escrow account when you meet at the LBS or coffee shop to hand over the goods. Know when that service gets launched? This summer.

i blame global warming and hipsters
it started with commuter bikes, which turned into fixies
then they tried mtb, we get 29er'ing
onto lift served, flow trails are born
racing sounds fun, hello enduro
next will be pump track strava KOM's
ciggs, pbr, and cutoffs will be replaced by chris king, cliff bars, and spandex
as soon as they start advertising calories burned per lap all will be lost...
just you wait and see!

If you're looking for a little more security in used gear sales, TGR's panjo marketplace runs through Paypal: https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/classifieds.php
Not sure if it offers any kind of escrow service, though..."We're in the eye of a shiticane here Julian, and Ricky's a low shit system!" - Jim Lahey, RIP

And panjo gets rave reviews from TGR users!

Seriously, does anyone use Panjo? I can't stand the fucking format and go straight to list view.

Maybe folks are nervous about meeting strangers with a large sum of cash in their pockets? I've definitely had some sketchy CL transactions - bought a pair of skis in an empty restaurant parking lot off Federal Ave in Denver on a Sunday morning once, had my wife waiting in the car with her phone ready to dial 911 if anything went down (turned out that the seller's girlfriend's parents owned the restaurant, hence the choice of meeting place).

Because presumably shredsalot gets to be a muckymuck in said fine startup? < shrug > a new startup won't change the fucked up used gear market that makes selling only the latest and greatest the only thing worth your time.
maybe you should have setup the meeting in a place with foot traffic instead of being a fucking idiot pegleg? google streetview + google? I mean, that's quicker than fucking around with some escrow service and giving them a cut for the extra hassle.
