As far as reliability, my car is an 06 with 135k on it. Best Volvo I have owned out of 4. And did I say it drives and kicks the shit out of most any SUV????
If I was a wagering man I'd bet my Outback with Baja suspension will haul more weight in the ass end than your pretty Volvo. Looks like shit and rides like a truck and the interior is almost but not quite as nice as an 87 Chevy Nova but that will change once I fix the cd player. It burns fuel at twice the rate of some factory slammed VAG oil burner but then again nobody ever accuses me of being Euro snob when I park it next to a row of trucks. Potholes don't cause my tires and oil pan to erupt like a beached whales intestines and when something does explode or fall off I can usually buy a replacement part for not much more than the cost of a 24 pack of Miller High Life so I usually buy both. It is the ultimate Sport Utility Wagon.

we all know the Subaru Outback is the ne plus ultra of TGR vehicledom.

You must live in some socialist country for parts to be cheaper than a 24-pack of the High Life.

Actualy on the highways of the great white north which suck big time compared to the excited states the mini van is way more practical, carries more shit, is more comfortable to drive, handles better due to the longer WB/front wheel drive but what is rreally going on is that People buy SUV's to distance themselves from being mini van people

I got to drive a new A4 wagon TDI 6 speed all over skiable Europe in march...a blast! Although no snow on the roads the entire time but put over 2500km's and it rocked.

Cars like any tool, are made for a variety of purposes. The new VW AWD diesel wagon is made for us dopes that like to throw our dogs, surfboards, skis, camping stuff, etc in the back and drive on fairly decent roads (not dirt) and get excellent mpg. In my area, there is no need for 90% of the people to drive a truck or SUV, Mericans just like them, so whatever.
I guess my tastes and needs in a car definitely lean in the Euro snob direction, as I either want a full sized AWD wagon that has 300+ hp and is pretty deluxe or one that gets 40+ mpg and is still pretty nice. If Subie made either of those for delivery to N.A. I would give the brand a look. As far as parking next to a bunch of trucks in a sweet Audi RS6 Avant, I would just pity the fools.

Been there? Europe isn't that big...or maybe the word "all" was not exactly the correct choice. A ton of choices to ski based out of Cham.

Still the avant didnt blow a head gasket..so that was good

Unfortunately, I didn't look inside to see if the gas or clutch accepted tech fittings.

Think of the Dynafit shuffle as double-clutching.

I also didn't check the brake pedal. Since it's a Dynafit, I figure the brakes are vestigial and you're probably better off running the car without them.

I ditched my brakes for safety straps. Fred Flintstone didn't need no stinkin' brakes on his Brontobuggy, and neither do I.

Looking like more and more of a reality! Supposedly slated for Q1 2015. Hopefully if I start saving my pennies now and trade in my Volvo, I can afford to pick up a new one when they come out, or at least shortly thereafter. Don't get me wrong, I like my Volvo. It's a great car, but I seriously miss having a stick...and good fuel mileage.

Seems like in EVERY thread asking "what car to buy?", the most common response is the mythical car with awd AND a stick AND diesel AND a wagon. This is the first new car I've seen in America that checks ALL those boxes, so I'm a bit surprised at the overall lack of support in this thread. What's up with that?

    Because it's a VW.

Who cares if it's not your favorite brand? It's still the only car out there that checks all the boxes that the TGR collective supposedly demands.

Fine, add a box to check labeled "reliable."

Well, until Subaru, Honda, Toyota or anybody else comes out with this proper combination, then I guess I'm gonna have to go with VW, even if it's not as reliable. It's a shame that Subaru has been distancing themselves even further from manual transmissions in their Outbacks, and now even abandoned the hatchback with the new WRX. Oh yeah, and no diesels here in the states. Volvo makes great wagons, but I can't find any new ones with stick shifts and AWD. No diesel is also a given. Most companies offer AWD, but that means no stick. Less have proper hatchbacks/wagons. Even fewer have diesel as an option at all.

So aside from VW, does ANY automaker have a model in the states with this winning combination? And I'm not quite buying that VWs are terribly unreliable. As with many other Euro cars, from what I've heard it's all about being pro-active with the regular maintenance. Known plenty of folks with TDI Jettas with a gazillion miles and no problems. Known plenty of folks with Subarus with head gasket issues. Doesn't mean that TDIs are perfect. Doesn't mean that I'd avoid Subarus either. Unless you want some boring car like a Corolla, then there's always the chance you might have some reliability issues. To me it's worth that small gamble to have all the features I want.

yeah, we get it, you want a box check mobile and you don't care if it's reliable or actually how much it'll cost to operate. Way to be a TGR fashionista
