I vote they find some evidence in the pilots home, life, or that of a passenger with the skills to turn all that off and then fly the plane.
Wouldnt a fire burning for a while also account for differing offline times - something gets knocked out initially and the other only after the fire burns into that system?

The oil rig workers account of a fire basically has to be entirely mistaken re: a fire if it is simply pilot or hijacker.

Just talked about this with a former Navy Seal now private jet pilot over a couple of beers at the Wolf in Driggs.

His professional judgement was basically 'who the fuck knows'. But that if it would have landed [not crashed] somewhere, that somebody's cell phone would have pinged some tower, somewhere.

He also brought up another angle that I hadn't thought about: 'and who knows what was in the cargo bay that somebody could have wanted'.

In the end we concluded that the new IPA was better than PBR, so a pretty meaningful dialogue all the way around...

But not so much here. Taking all cell phones/devices from the pax is hijacking 101.

< shrug > I think it'd be hard to take 100% before someone sent an e-mail/text that'd sit there waiting to go.

Yeah I suppose it depends on the timing.

My GSM phone doesn't usually work at altitude, but I believe CDMA is popular in most of SE Asia and China. And IIRC the range of CDMA is a little better.

But so many variables. I'm sticking with who the fuck knows.

I think the pilot(s) did it. Took the plane rapidly to 45,000 feet (above the max. altitude for the 777), cabin lost pressure and pax died from lack of oxygen. Pilot(s) were ready and had the masks on, and then either dumped the plane in the ocean or landed elsewhere. Dead pax cannot use cell phones or fight back against the pilot(s).

Just a theory, among all the other theories floating around out there.

I interviewed a few pilots yesterday and what seemed to be the best theories to me at least were that, one, there were no calls for help because no one ever knew they got hijacked. Plane went dark, flight continued like normal, just made a turn that no one noticed. Hell, they were all planning to fly for another few hours at least.

This can be paired (or not) with the theory that the pilots hijacked the plane by depressurizing the cabin and made use of their separate oxygen supply that is on a different system in the cockpit (or simply oxygen tanks), essentially suffocating all of the passengers while they were just fine.

The most far out person mentioned the fact (or made up thought from nowhere in particular) that cosmonauts were just brought back from the space station and that someone has used Star Wars to zap this plane from the sky and shit is about to get real crazy all over the world.
"One season per year, the gods open the skies, and releases a white, fluffy, pillow on top of the most forbidding mountain landscapes, allowing people to travel over them with ease and relative abandonment of concern for safety. It's incredible."

Actually CDMA is not very popular outside of North America. That is why Verizon had global versions of CDMA phones (Sim card slot locked out of American GSM carriers and designed to allow GSM on carriers outside Continent North America) before they started using Sims for 4G data. However the majority of the passengers were from Asia and would be carrying phones from Asian cellular companies.

If it did fly around at the highest altitude reported (oxygen depriving levels up to 45,000 feet) over one of the Oceans there would be no cellular regardless of the type of cell phone they had- satellite phone would have been required for much of the search area.

Maybe it was eventually shot down by somebody.

Either way, obvious the captain lost his marbles. Wife moved out day before, opposition leader jailed hrs before. If so may not have been very well planed.
