err, you've already had a pilot chime in many times on this thread

until there's actual information (which nobody on this site, no matter how cool, has a pipeline too) it's just going to be a sea of bullshit. like everything reported.

What good can ever come from turning a transponder off? I would have thought after 911, and the trillions wasted, that feature would have been removed from at least all commercial airliners. Or at least a fucking password.

    That is really, really disturbing.
I thought the exact same thing... reading that transcript is frightening - the part about how the dude had the stick back the entire time without the other pilots realizing it as there is no feedback loop. Awful stuff that seemingly shouldn't have happened. Interesting too what they note about how advanced autopilot systems could actually be a detriment, to a point.

NTSB people are saying a full decompression and it flew for hours, but that does not explain how/why transponder was turned off manually.

Yeah, pretty scary. Why the hell would you haul back just because autopilot shut off and you couldn't read airspeed for a few seconds? I've never even flown an AC with autopilot but that just seems like a really bizarre thing to do in that event. Attitude indicator anyone?

Well, the autopilot shut off (because of no airspeed readings or inconsistent airspeed readings) and transitioned from normal law to alt law, which configures the computer differently. I'm pretty sure that because of the high angle of attack (caused by the pilot) the stall warning never went off because of the alt law configuration.

Then they ignored a bunch of other information that should have told them what was going on, ignored a procedure or two and slammed the thing into the ocean.

I think it was covered earlier, but if you have your transponder on at the airport while taxiing then the radar screen will be a blob for air traffic control and you could potentially trigger a TCAS warning for landing/departing aircraft.

Is it possible this was a non-political hijacking. Something to do with those 20 defense contractors. An earlier link described their work as sometime like stealth technology but done with electronics rather than radar absorbing material. Useful technology for a rouge nation like Iran.

Anybody check out the medals and bars on the mighty Malaysian general's uniforms at the press conferences? You gotta love these little third world military clowns when they are suddenly thrust into the world media. Like any of them have actually been in a war of any sort.

and yup, everyone on TGR is a better pilot than the pros, we're back to regularly scheduled programming.

Malaysia's not the third world Benny, Kuala Lampur is way nicer than Jersey for example. Or most of Long Island except the Hampton's.

Article says the stall warning was heard ~75 times on the cockpit voice recordings. They speculate that the co-pilot ignored the warnings because he didn't realize the computer had switched to alt law and believed it was impossible to actually stall the plane.
