Fit of Mercury compared to TLT5

I've got TLT5's, fit tight and with the metatarsals area blown way out. I've got thin heels and ankles so this works for me.

I'm looking at the Mercury as a beefier boot, but local shops don't have my size in stock so I'm going to order. My question is, how is the fit, compared to the TLT5? They seem wider in the forefoot, how is the heel?

    Anyone ski both??

I have both, or I did. TLT5 and Mercury are similar in the heel and midfoot (meaning quite narrow) but Mercury is wider and taller in the forefoot. The Mercury/Vulcan instep may be a bit lower than the TLT5, at least I had more trouble with it.

I have both the 5 and the merc, and a similar foot to yours. I needed all the same work done on both my 5 and merc.

One (same fit as Merc?) vs. TLT5: Same impressions as Greg. One/Merc forefoot a bit wider, quite a bit taller, i.e., lots to toe wiggle room. One/Merc has different instep profile, maybe a bit tighter at the middle buckle, was an issue for me. Both boots have medium narrow heels, fantastic heel hold.

Steve, curious about your instep issues with the Merc/One. I tried on some Mercs last night. My hobbit feet and narrow heel pocket fit great, but there was some serious instep pressure as I have a very high instep. Were you ever able to rectify this? If so, how?

It wasn't too bad, but it bugged me enough such that I sold my One PX to a bud and replaced them with Maestrale RS. Other people with Vulc/Merc/One have made similar comments, so you might do a callout for how they dealt with it.

somebody in the vulcan thread unpicked/took that 5" piece of fabric off the top of the dynafit liner and claimed relief which I could believe, since the liners are just sitting on the shelf anyway I might try that but I have just replaced the liner on my mercs instead

"""Exactly, the seams land right on the top of the metatarsal head (i think thats what its called??) causing a lot of pain when the middle buckle is clamped down. I may try cutting up some elastic and stitching it in a different orientation to keep the tongue down . Currently having to push the tongue down each time I take the boot off.

OK since the stock liners are useless to me and just sitting on the shelf I thot WTF not try this mod SO I removed this^^ piece on one liner and left the other for comparison ^^ as per skialpy, AND so just standing around the mancave there is a very noticable difference in the amount of pressure on the 1st metatarsal as in I think I could actualy ski the liner with the piece removed

It was pretty easy to remove that piece without fucking anything up, just cut the stitches with a razor blade it takes 5 min, as skialpy mentioned the tongue doesn't stay down so well after removing the cover piece but there is a BIG difference

edit: I measured the thickness of that piece with calipers, its 2-3mm thick where they stack no wonder it hurts, if that piece was left out and 2 more sets of lace loops were sewn into the liner lower down to keep the tongue in place the liner would work WAY better

Nice beta. Thank you. I may go back and look at the Merc's liner and see if that's something that could free up some instep space.

Per the laces; is there room to add more loops down lower as you mentioned?

yes i think it could be done with needle & thread

what you would need to do is sew some edging on the now unfinished liner edge cuz they did not finish the liner edge under what you will remove and then 2 sets of loops(4 in total) made of maybe nylon para cord onto that edge

For giggles, I tried on the RS this weekend; the instep issue was worse than the Mercury. Go figure. Nonetheless, I appreciated the advice.

Good to know. I'll keep that in mind as my Hobbit feet don't seem to be all that friendly with proper AT boots.

Absolutely. That, and finding a proper AT boot fitter isn't as easy as I thought.

Yeah, my foot couldn't even fit in the RS. Pretty tight instep. Merc was ok though.

Question about shell sizes in Dynafits...

Looking to buy a Mercury. Wear alpine 29.5. What's the difference btwn she'll size 29 and 29.5?

Is it just a cheap footbed in the liner? I also have a custom orthotic I will swap btwn all boots for now.

    Thanks

29/29.5 is the same shell. Liners are the same only molded slightly and I do mean "slightly" different.

Shell, as Dane mentions, is the same. There MAY be some difference in the liners, though when I tried on the 27.0 and 27.5 the 27.0 actually felt roomier. If you have instep issues, your custom orthotic may exacerbate them - I had to grind a couple millimeters of foam off my custom footbeds to use them in the Mercury.
