Modifying non-tech boots with aftermarket tech soles??

Anyone tried to modify a non-tech AT boot, like the Scarpa Typhoon for example, with aftermarket tech soles like these or these?

If the soles themselves can't be modified to work, imagine it would also be possible to just cut out the tech inserts from the aftermarket soles and modify them to fit into one of the soles that comes with the Scarpa Typhoon (or a related boot), right?

My other question is, is it absolutely necessary to have that dynafit heel (with the grooves cut into it) to fit into a tech binding or do you just need the toe fittings to make it work?

Thanks for answering this backcountry jongs questions!

Here's all you need to know about that idea. Personally, I think it's an utter waste of time. You can buy some used shells with tech fittings for $50 probably.

These guys will do the toes for $100.

I am sure it will work just fine .... in fact, you can do it without all that fancy aftermarket jazz. Just heat your boots up with a heat gun, and then jam them into the tech binding...be sure to let them cool properly.

yes, the tech heel is required if you want to ski. Also, I would strongly recommend NOT modifying tech toes fitting into your own boot. While it might be possible even the people that are good at it (CAST?) only modify it for the up, it's not a skiable conversion.

new boots are a lot cheaper than new knees.

It can be done but probably more work than its worth at this point with all the AT boot options out there these days.

Until a company makes an AT boot for the downhill, I'll keep skiing these. 50+ days on these, no problems
