This just in from the Book of Faces: MadPat and Snowway Steve skied a patch of snow in New Hampshire today. The streak continues. Can't link to pics for some reason.

And to think that I was hauling firewood, getting ready for NEXT winter.

Good on you! That area of the 'daks is really gorgeous. One of my early childhood buddies has a house on Indian Lake so I know the area pretty well, if you have any questions do ask. Also if you have any hikers in your group Snowy Mt. is a fun (gets steep and rocky for last half mile) hike with great 360* views.

We are definitely doing Snowy and maybe Crane. Both look like good hiking with a little climbing for good measure. Any other peaks you like in the area?

Chimney Mountain is pretty cool, definitely easier than Snowy but the views from up top are good for a smaller mountain and it also has some caves to explore in the actual chimney rock formation area. It does have a very minuscule parking fee as it is on private land.

This crappy phone pic doesn't do this justice, but it was probably the most impressive full double I've seen at the beach. More common on the west side, but usually the hills hide the pot of gold.

The record amount of turns was 15 on Saturday. Most people managed between 6-10 on the 50ft vertical patch (16 meters to be exact).

Someone posted on AZ that he made July turns on Sunday. As for Saturday, there was enough skiers to cover the whole patch. Trying to finish a TR before the end of the week.

In retrospect, that recent Tux pic makes me feel far more sensible exactly a dozen years ago on this day:

Okay, so if not far more sensible, then how about slightly less insensible?

    Definitely!!!

The size of the patch doesn't matter.

Driving and hiking a few hours to ski a snow patch in July = driving way farther to West Virginia in a Hurricane midweek to ski in October.

All mad and totally acceptable madness in my book.

    Nice double rainbow pic.

Plus Tux is of course a worthy destination in and of itself, whether with snow or not, whether skiing or not.
Or as was said on the hiking trail many years ago...
Random Hiker: "Looks like a lot of hiking for very little skiing."
Me: "Yes, but you're doing just as much hiking, for no skiing."

Speaking of small patches of snow:
    http://www.registercitizen.com/gener...er-passes-away

The Google hits for the long-since legendary "Crazy Rod" unfortunately focus mainly now on all the tubing/sledding lawsuits and reviews:
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/woodbury-ski-area-woodbury

But for awhile he made news by opening in October before anyone else.

And I always heard of him from a ski racer friend stuck in Greenwich CT who would often go there to train, i.e., hand over some trivial amount of cash, for which Rod would let you have a drill and some gates to go at it yourself.

Apparently Rod never heard about how potentially risky activities were supposedly being suppressed by our overly litigious society.

I finally made it down there this past season to hand off some ski decorations I had made for a NYC friend's daughter's bat mitzvah: for November 23, the snow cover was pretty good, and the ~300' vertical offered some solid intermediate pitch.
Even just a short evening conveyed some of the ... flavor, e.g., no ski patrol, yet a random Mount Snow ski patrol jacket was worn by a lift operator ... with no first-aid training at all.

Looking back on it, it was a whacky offbeat ski outing for a whacky offbeat purpose, and I'm really glad I finally got to meet the man himself in what turned out to be his final ski season of creating so much winter fun down there (as well as business for contingency fee lawyers...).

p.s. it isn't the official beer of the ECRC, but this Rockaway Brewery is trying to put their suds in cans, too. I think it's a worthy cause: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...-rockaway-beer

p.p.s. Is there any skiing up there, NEK?
