Anything new? Sound quality is more important than portability although I would like to be able to take it outside to grill and down to the park, etc.

This will be the primary speaker for listening to music.

Check UE boom or mega boom. I have the boom for portable use and couldn't be happier.

I have a little unit made by Sony. Good sound, not too big (3X3X8?), charges with USB. Lasts 6+ hours.

Seriously the Soundlink series are awesome. I was amazed at how well they sound and how loud they got.

The one thing that Bose does right is big sound out of small woofers. They use drivers in double bandpass aligments to get port effeciency across a wider bandwidth and use DSP or other tricks to smooth out the response. Not high fidelity but effecient, powerful and small which is exactly what these devices need. For typical hifi speakers, Bose gets laughed at, but this is something they do right.
