i drove a front wheel drive civic up there for 6 years, 20+ times a season. siped snow tires and almost never used chains. but i don't drive like an idiot up there either. the only times i ever had a problem were when meadows didn't plow their lot. if i were doing it again, i'd probably use my chains more than i did, but i just drove slowly and kept my distance.
and no, to head off all the whiners at the pass, i did not hold up any traffic.
edit: of course, i may have been lucky. i did have a problem one other time - when we went up on a weekend and it was bumper to bumper on 35. people were sliding but as long as everybody kept moving we were fine. then somebody stopped and everybody stopped and then several cars started to slide into the snow bank because of the slope of the road, including myself. so me and a bunch of other people had to get out and put them on in the middle of that mess. i used to decided at govt camp if i was going to put on the chains or not, but the conditions can be so different between govy and mhm that after that incident i used them more often just because i didn't know what was coming.
now we have the subaru with siped snow tires and no problemsLast edited by spook; 09-30-2013 at 01:41 PM.

My first 4 seasons I was driving a rear wheel drive inifiniti g35 to the mountain. We're talking 60 day season. First 2 years i played the chain game....it fucking sucks. Last 2 years in that car I had a good set of studless snow tires. Very few issues. Stuck in the lot a couple of times on heavy days.
Just can't drive like a dickhead and expect to make it in one piece. Outback with snow tires has made my drive a lot nicer.Training for Alpental

2 years playing the chain game...that is dedication! I've gone with snow tires for what seems like forever.

Bachelor passes are bought.
UPS delivered my kid's Line Sir Francis Bacon Shorty skis today and they now grace our fireplace mantle for viewing pleasure during dinner.

Key is getting up there before Spook 2WD or 4WD - leave around 6:15 and he turns off and T-Line - you'll notice when he turns as the traffic starts moving again.
I drove a Volvo 240 wagon the last 3 years - no problem - I got stuck in the lots frequently on big days but aim downhill and you'll be OK. Ride share with other junkies - the best way to the hill.
Skibowl is the best lift access on a snow night - rain night not so fun but the mid mountain hut is the best drinking on/near Hood. They don't open until 3PM during the week post holiday break - no one tracking your lines (well less people). $129 annual night pass is the best deal I know of .

Or just go through the hood, less traffic, stop at double mountain on the way home. Take a long handled shovel for the deep days.
Hmmm, bachy hood thread....

Anyone with any beta on Mt. bachelor for right now. Considering a road trip.... Web cam makes the snow look pretty thin at the btm of pine martin but I was wondering how things were up top?

Thanks Jones and split. Ill keep riding my bike down here in tahoe. I was hoping for a good enough of a reason to make the drive up.

Has anybody here done the wallowa huts thing? Just got back from that area, Eagle Cap is looking real purdy already. Wish I had a good picture to post, but I was busy shooting at deer and missing.

I did a long weekend trip with Wallowa Alpine Huts to Big Sheep ~8 years ago. Very nice terrain of all types/stripes. Easy three mile skin into camp while they sled in the provisions. They fed us well considering its the backcountry. Guides were great. I think they've changed hands since I was there so you may want a more recent report.
