Thanks for the info on Dornans BTW. Stopped there for beers after a sweet hike up Cascade Canyon last week. Click image for larger version.

Here's a link to the Targhee Snotel (short version- it says there's 24") http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/reportG...ue,TOBS::value

And to the Chief Joe precip station (no wind)http://mesowest.utah.edu/cgi-bin/dro...e.cgi?stn=GTCJ
Looks like the snow depth sensor needs to be reset. This station temp usually reads about 7* below true.

Here is the wind station on top of Targhee: http://mesowest.utah.edu/cgi-bin/dro...e.cgi?stn=GTFM

They do allow uphill traffic until opening, but the routes may be amended as they set up the mountain. There have been some real incidents and real avalanche danger over in the Headwall/ Good/Bad/ Ugly area, especially with SW winds. It is real- turn on yer beacon (which was one of the issues in the rescue up there a few years ago).

Skied Togwotee Pass this morning, definitely more cars up there than I was expecting. Snow was decent, but not as good as two weeks ago during the last major cycle. Some spots were awesome, others had a layer of sun affected snow about 6 inches down or so that was relatively unstable. Dug a couple pits and brushed up on the skills, definitely getting the itch for full on winter mode!

And of course, more people boot packing up the skin track again.

This was the 6" later that was in some areas. It broke off pretty easily after starting to cut the sides and was pretty cohesive as a slab.

Its early and risk levels aren't high, but it is always something to pay attention to, don't neglect your safety meetings!

Thanks for the beta gilly and homemadesalsa. Put in the skin to the top of peaked today, what a bitch. Snotel does not lie, knee to thigh deep. Fun turns but almost too much snow for that mellow cat terrain and the visibility was terrible. Have fun out thereClick image for larger version.

Word is the N. NE slope slid today on Peaked, on top of the shitty layer from earlier. Not typically a skied line, natural. So, uhh...

By the sounds of it Targhee's got the best meadow-shredding going for the weekend. A little TGR office crew may head there at some point, sounds like tomorrow will heat up quick and Sunday will cool off with a solid chance for snow... Sunday maybe?

Well, the TGR office JONGS joined in on the pre-season ski area mountaineering fun at Targhee today, and managed to catch some pretty radically good pow on the upper 1/3 of the mountain along with the rest of the full parking lot. After our group of varying fitness levels rejoined near the top of Fred's, it was time to take a dumb group photo. JONGS! From left to right: Sarah, Justin Fann (cinematographer/editor), Brian Wulf (" "), Kirsten, Heather Hendricks (gear and travel editor), your truly the newb himself, Joni McGregor (social media editor), Nick Kalisz (cine/editor), and Folsom. Just in case you wanted to get to know a few of the cast at the Wilson office.

Heather, so glad she didn't move to NYC, and readying for the barrel...

    ...and WA-POW! Totally pitted.

J-Fann manhandling his rather tired (and very heavy) dog Jack down the fall line after Jack got tired out on the skin track.

Wulfie with some epic air. We thought the helicopter coming up the valley was Todd Jones coming to film us in 4K, but unfortunately there's no ball-mounted-heli-assisted-GSS-4K love for the office jongs...

Somewhere in that pow cloud is a gentleman and the dog of ours he helped out by escorting down the top of The Good... double shacking!

Of course, no day being totally extreme would be complete without triple corking off the sledding jump by the bar... Mom approves!

All in all, a fun first day on the hill for many of us and seriously good pow coming down The Good and The Bad with just a touch of a rain crust and enough base to keep the sharks at bay. Plenty of tracks at this point but the snow this week should put us back in the fun zone.

Looking for a place to park a 5th wheel (camper) for the winter in TV, or Wilson to intermittently stay at from Dec-April. I'm willing to fork out for some electricity (just an extension cord) and pay something like 150 a month to just park the dang thing out of your way if if you have a little extra land or whatnot. Its an easy couple hundred bones for absolutely no work on your part. Looking at December through April. I'll come and go before the ground thaws. Just putting the feeler out there and looking around to see who/s interested.

Figured that might have been a mag helping us with the assist! Give thanks to your boy Tate for us, watching him get absolutely pitted in that slash with the dog in hand and then seeing them both exit the pow cloud, the dog completely covered in white, was friggin' awesome!

A late-day, skier-triggered avalanche on Jackson Peak Sunday severely injured one local man, according to Undersheriff Bob Gilliam.

Scott Dixon, 32, from Teton Valley, Idaho was airlifted to St. John’s Medical Center with a hip injury after he was caught in a slide off Jackson Peak at approximately 4:30 p.m. A hard slab break at 10,100 feet was recorded with the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center. The avalanche occurred on a 36-40 degree slope and was determined human-caused.

“The SAR folks who responded said it could have been a lot worse than it was,” Gilliam said. “This is the second avalanche incident and it’s not even Thanksgiving. We need to get the word out.”

On Nov. 1, Laura Krusheski, 29, injured her leg in an avalanche while skiing near Breccia Peak on Togwotee Pass.

Significant early snowfall, combined with later rain and warming temperatures, has created a crust layer and dangerous conditions in the backcountry, according to several weather forecasters and snowpack/avalanche experts. The Avalanche Center today elevated the general avalanche advisory for the entire Jackson Hole region from Low to Moderate.

Dixon was part of a group of four skiers. His companions called 911 for help after the incident. Jackson Peak is rarely skied, especially later in the season when access is more difficult.

A little stoke from the office jongs' trip to Togwotee Pass yeseterday:

After leaving the parking lot and being one of the few people not making lots of noise on a snowmobile, we scaled into the quiet of the trees and along the standard right edge of this ridge. These chutes looked fun but were getting a lot of heat from the sun with the Southeast (?) aspect.

We near the peak... congrats to office jong Heather and Kirsten for smoking the rest of the crew up to the top.

Beautiful view from the top, although the dude on the right had to climb down the sun-baked side of the ridge into a pretty sketchy spot to recover his ski. At least these plastic Marker Tours have ski brakes...

Camera (phone) didn't get taken out on the way down but it was actually pretty deep and supportable, just skied like a goon with that heavier snow sitting on top. JONG!! Fun lap thought and beautiful day out there. Little bit of a traverse back to the car and avoidance of pinner sled traffic, and the critical mistake of not having any beers in the trunk to come home too... at least we got a splendid vista of 'Merica's great Tetons on the way home. Also bummer for this guy: http://planetjh.com/2013/11/11/jacks...injures-local/, hope he's okay. Feel like the one thing on the radar conditions-wise this weekend was that three-foot slabs were possible on steep north-facing slopes above 9,000' due to the October drought, which is where these guys were playing.
