^^^HA!
Gotta admit that General Lee does look nice. As well as having a bail out gear you can gain another top end gear by going to a bigger chainring. General Lee+Raceface N/W chainring and you've XX1 range and functionality for about $250. That's a lot better than $1K+ best case scenario.
I think the ideal for me would be 34X11-40. You could add a 32t chainring into the mix if you need it.There's nothing better than sliding down snow, and flying through the air

That's the direction I was trying to go with the eBay 38t, but I guess all of those are bending like pretzels. (Dude sent me back a warranty one, but not without griping)
Maybe with 2 action Tec versions, a 38 and a 40, but that would be spendy, too! (And high wear items)

I asked the General Lee ebay seller about using the 42 with a med cage. He said the following:
"Hi
I didn't test it with a medium gage derraileur.
I think it has to do with providing the right tension when you ride the 11T cog"
So the potential issue is that the chain ends up too slack in the small cog if long enough to accommodate a 42. Does this sound like a legitimate concern? As I calculated before, there is less slack to take out with a 1x11-42 than with a 2x11-36. Though I guess with a 2x system, you don't use the small-small combos very often.

40T chainrings are cheaper, especially when run as 1x9 11-40. Maybe not as pretty, but more dirtbag cred. Cost is under $100, and minimal sweat equity.

Testing it out as soon as the chainring arrives. Will likely be running it at Enchiladafest.Last edited by Lindahl; 08-11-2013 at 01:35 AM.

Lol, as if there's not millions of people on the trails in van/squam/whis either, skidding all the dirt off til there's just rocks and roots left.
on another note, I made the mistake of demoing a bike at crankworx (norco range with all 2014 rockshox/sram stuff on it) that was amazing and way way way out of my price range... xx1 is actually pretty neat, I had it with a 32 tooth ring and got most of the yummy climb no problem, not even in the lowest gear for the single track switchbacky part. i'm sure a 30 would be better for flank grunts and stuff.... I will keep using a front derailleur til i win the lotto I think

Neither of those big cogs have any support from a wider, larger diameter cassette body like the factory ones. The stainless one is known to bend. The Ti one would likely rip through your alloy freehub body. Either way you're looking at likely failure and of the component itself and possibly a lot of other stuff with it.
Good idea but I'm skeptical, and we're talking ten speed here anyway.
It's all hypothetical for me because I'm happy with my 32X11-36 ten speed right now. There's nothing better than sliding down snow, and flying through the air
