My pick from 2014 is Whiplash. Awesome movie.

Oh the insults are top notch in this flick.

OK we're going to take in a movie this eve and are between a couple choices- anyone seen Mordacai yet? looks mildly amusing so that is on the list as well as the Imitation game and Whiplash.
the bf thinks whiplash looks too heavy so I lean towards Imitation game... Wish inherent vice was playing here bc that would be my top choice. Foxcatcher was also high on the list but just left the theatre here yest. any strong rec's between Mordacia, Imitation and Whiplash?
    Thanks!

Just got back from Whiplash. Great movie. The music dork in me picked apart some silly shit but overall, quite well done. J.K. Simmons was fucking stellar.

If you haven't seen Chappie yet, and are even remotely considering doing so ...... step in front of a speeding train first, then reconsider.

    Bloomkamp is dead to me.

Oh, as if it wasn't already a lost cause, he's signed on for Leviathan now too. Kiss of death.

Don't forget Alien 5 too, but apparently it's going to pick up where Aliens ended so maybe it's 3.1.

Chappie is worth seeing just for the effects & action sequences but I am getting a little tired of watching movies for this reason alone. Die Antwoord's antics were pretty entertaining but if they had've toned their self aggrandizement down a bit it would have made the movie much more watchable.

Furious 7 was a let down and that's coming from a fan of the series. The last few were silly but really fun and this one didn't have that, it was a caricature of what made the others enjoyable. Pacing was terrible and while F&F dialogue has never been good this one was just horrible, it made 2 Fast look like an Oscar winner. The ending was a Paul Walker tribute so it had a weird slapped back into reality feeling. My friend commented that Paul's white car should have floated off into heaven as it drove towards the horizon as it would have summed up the movie in one absurd scene.

watched Kingsman: The Secret Service yesterday.
i was somewhat looking forward to the film given the pedigree of the director, Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust, X-Men: First Class), but was moderately disappointed.
it's the second screen adaptation that Vaughn has done based on the comic book work of Mark Millar (Kick-Ass being the other).
i dig Millar's comic work, but when it gets transferred to the silver screen it always seems to lose something, especially in terms of the satirical and vitriolic humor.
Kingsman treaded the line between over-the-top action and over-the-top humor and almost always seemed to lose in terms of the latter (case in point, Samuel L. Jackson's annoying villain).
while the film makes no illusion at being a riff on the classic Bond films of the '60s and '70s, its homage falls short of being flattering.
that said, the acting, Jackson's involvement aside, is solid and much of the action and story is entertaining enough to keep you involved, but not memorable enough to keep you recalling much of the film once you leave the theater.

Jackson has become a travesty, a film-killer - so sad. I blame Capitol One. And his wardrobe adviser should be shot.

    saw Furious 7 today.
the film was severely lacking in "seoul", pun definitely intended and aimed at the absence of Han, perhaps the series coolest character.
it also seemed to lack the cohesion and overall comraderic vibe of the previous 4 films (perhaps due to the departure of longtime director Justin Lin?)
granted, the action sequences were mind-numbingly off-the-nuts, but the film just seemed to lack any personality, not to mention that it really went off the deep end in terms of the characters becoming these over-the-top caricatures of secret agents (I know, I know, they emerged as these in F6, but that film just flowed a lot better: again perhaps because of the participation of Lin and the inclusion of the character Han).
as mentioned above, the flow/pacing of F7 was bit erratic; the film never really seemed to gel as a whole.
the previous films always managed to at least stay grounded in the characters and the whole "family" thematics, but this film just seemed to be echoing any real semblance of humanity in lieu of taking the action to extremes; most of the actors seemed to just be going through the motions/cruising through each scene on auto-pilot.
The Rock is easily in the running for becoming the new Arnie, what with his smoking guns and cheesy one-liners.
Overall, perhaps the weakest of the series, just a notch above 2 Fast 2 Furious.

yammered about this flick over on the Horror Movies thread, but figured it was worth mentioning here, as well:

It Follows is deserving of all the praise it's been getting.
worth seeing in the theaters due to the sound design alone.
it's an eerie, uncomfortable teen horror flick that borrows a wee bit from the Japanese malevolent spirit genre (The Grudge, The Eye, Uzumaki, Pulse, etc) as well as American fare such as Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween (the music is definitely influenced by John Carpenter as well as the pacing of the film).
it's teeming with quite a bit of allegory for those that like their scares with a semi-intelligent undertone, too.

Additionally, it falls into line with the films of Adam Wingard/Simon Barrett (You're Next, The Guest) being this strange kind of retro homage wherein it isn't clear what time period the story takes place in: could be present day, could be early '90s, could be early '80s; this strange ambiguity adds to the overall vibe of the film.

    Ex Machina is solid.
If you strip away the sci-fi trappings it's a tightly knit and gripping film noir.
    Oscar Isaac is off-the-nuts.

Just saw The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
    Pretty solid.
Thought it was much tighter than the first Avengers flick.
I was the only moviegoer in the theater who laughed at the Eugene O'Neil joke delivered by Tony Stark, though.
Will be interested to see where they go from here with the team.

Mad Max: Fury Road is gonzo nuts.
It's basically two off-the-charts car chases buffeted by a momentary lapse of warm-hearted feel goodness in the middle (obviously creator George Miller wrestling with his conflicting Mad Max and Babe personalities).
think Death Race 2000 on a virulant strain of crystal meth.
saw it in 2D the first time around. seriously contemplating seeing it in 3D now.

Good god was Jurassic World bad. Such a cliche movie, and I couldn't have cared less if any of the characters minus Pratt were killed off. Kind of funny reading the director talking about anti commercialism and going against the typical Hollywood formula, only to roll out this sexist, cheesy, product filled POS. /rant over.

ps I hope Jimmy Buffet got eaten.
