    Pre-Work Turns

I love pre-work turns. They're not generally gnarly or epic (even when you call them "dawn patrols"). And it's hard to get enough sleep. But they make ordinary work days better by a factor of 10. They're also useful when you've been saddled with parenting duties for the day. Anyhoo, here's my guide to pre-work turns, staring sierraskier and a non-TGR friend.

Step 1: Live or work somewhere close to skiable mountains. Perhaps part of your commute looks like this:

Step 2: Wake up when your alarm goes off. This is probably the hardest part because it’s cold and looks like this outside:

Step 3: Make coffee. You’re up at an ungodly hour, so treat yourself to something better than supermarket swill. At this hour in the morning, I prefer the viscosity of my coffee to be somewhere between consume and clam chowder.

Step 4: Drive icy roads to the trailhead and commence climbing.

Step 5: Time your summit arrival with the sunrise.

Step 6: Have a look around. Try to find large bodies of water. Or, if you're my buddy, shoot out a few work emails from your iPhone.

    Step 7: Ski powder.

Step 8: Return to car and change into business casual on the side of the road at 8500’.

Step 9: Show up at work before 9 a.m. slightly disheveled and unshaven. Do your job, which should feel a little less grinding.

Or don’t do your job. You skied powder this morning and work can suck it.

    The end.

Yep. That's what it's all about!
My version of "pre-work" powder turns is; get on first chair, ride the lifts up to 12,500 ft., hike another 300 vert, exit a bc access gate, ski 4,000 vertical of untracked back to the base, go to work.

Nicely done, way better than my arrangement (skinning a groomer). Starting the work day after some snow fun makes everything better.

    Awesomeness.

... and I haven't done any pre-work skiing this year. Oh well.

My day usually goes slightly similar except around 9am I send email to the boss.
"Running late this morning, won't be in till around 11"
Arrive at work at 11:30, head out to lunch with the early lunch crew.
Back at the desk around 1pm ready to start the day.

Nice AK. Kind of reminds me of when I used to go to work and would get a surf first. I love the pre dawn drive to the break.

These days, when I get a day to ski, I am trying to start as early as possible, and go all day. Problem is I get tired by dusk.

BTW, love the lighting in the first ski shot.

I like that same run. But now with the time change I can't ski down in the light and make it to work on time. 7:30 start. Now I do after work laps.

I get pre high school turns. wake up at 4. skinning by 5 and I'm at school by 8. It totally makes the day 100% better and plus you can't beat a 4:20 am bowl!
