Advice around little cottonwood and big cotton wood

So I'm taking a trip to the bird with the family for spring break. I've got a friend that lives out in park city and she's been there for a little under a year now. We're looking to meet up and do some out of bounds skiing but need some advice on where to go. She's done a little in Big Cotton Wood before but we want options just incase of weather and snowpack. We're looking in the area because I feel bad making her drive to pick me up and then to where ever we're gonna be skiing so keeping it under like 45 mins of driving is critical.

I've tried searching but not much came up, unless i'm looking in the wrong place, and we both have to obvious essentials of beacon, probe, shovel, and an aiare 1 under our belts.

Drive up either canyon, look up and away from the resorts, start skinning. There are thousands of options from mellow to gnar/going to die runs.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

OP, if your friend doesn't know the area well enough to suggest a couple of routes, a backcountry tour with an even less knowledgeable partner (that would be you) is not a good idea. Better to hire a guide rather than find yourself cliffed out someplace - or buried.

AGREE WITH HUTASH. NOT HARD TO FIND A SKIN TRACK. FOLLOW IT TO THE GOODS. RESEARCH YOUR WAY BACK OUT. SAFER OPTION IS TO FIND A LOCAL WHO KNOWS HIS WAY AROUND. GAIN YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE OVER TIME. VERY EASY TO GET FORCED INTO SOME KNAR YOU WANTED TO AVOID IN YOUR PLAN IF YOU GET OFF COURSE. MUCH DIFFERENT THAN BC BACK EAST.

Make sure you have a columbia ski outfit, go-pro and don't wear a helmet. When you split you head open or die, have the footage uploaded here.

She's already got a few places in mind but we'd just like to have a few more options. Just looking for some advice if anyone has some must hit areas.

u & ur friend should be able to sift thru that thread and pik up info re: trail/heads/summits/bowls. w/ topo map and checking out a hikers guide...I saw a free one at the REI; 3300 South store, at the NFS desk w/ major trailheads marked...

essentials... sunscreen, water bottles, lunch bucket, dark chocolate, and therma-rest should be topping ur list. ;-)

With that attitude, the backcountry would be completely empty. Because nobody would ever explore and find things on their own. Having a guide -- paid for or not -- is certainly helpful, but it is kind of silly to suggest that 2 people with appropriate gear and training can't be pointed in the right direction and figure something out.

That said, hutash's advice is pretty much spot on. I've done a tour up LCC, across from Alta, that wouldn't be hard to figure out, and one by Solitude too, that also wouldn't be that hard to figure out.

You are right - without pushing the limits a little nothing new is discovered. You are also absolutely right that there's lots of simple, easy-to-reach shots in both BCC and LCC, as well as a lot of cool, non-technical tours.

My point is if OP's friend, as an almost year-long "local" who's "done a little in BCC", doesn't know anything about these lines and routes already, does she bring sufficient backcountry experience to take an ice coaster on a route neither has ever seen, isn't in the guidebooks and so requires inside G2 from the Utards?

    What could go wrong?

Please call it "touring" or "backcountry skiing" not "out of bounds skiing". Sounds like you're a gaper ducking a rope. By the looks of your request I would say you should tread pretty lightly if you're going to go out on your own, and do plenty of research (including asking local avy pros/trollers about current conditions and your possible route choices).

Oh, and second on the astroglide. It works great for stopping snow globbing up on your skins if the temp heats up during the day.

Did I miss the part about "not in the guidebooks"? It didn't sound like he was asking for some super secret stash, just an idea for a tour or two. And living a year in Park City doesn't necessarily mean one instantly becomes a BCC/LCC expert, or even novice. I don't read anything into it at all; she's only slightly less new to the area than he is.

As a visitor, I have toured based on the advice of people here and on TTips, with other non-locals, using the basic advice given and our own backcountry savvy (or lack thereof). It was "risky" in the sense that all bc travel is risky, but we used our heads (reading avy forecast, evaluating snow, aspects, slope angle, etc) and had a great time. Giving someone a few pointers who says that both have a level 1 and gear is different than pointing a novice who doesn't have gear (or just bought it) and no education into the backcountry.

these days... ski south facing early, avoid thin cover rocky areas and have a good topo.
