    Avalanche death near Marble CO

Sad news out of Marble yesterday - condolences to the victim's family and friends. According to the Aspen Times, victim was a 37 year old male from Summit County. From the CAIC:

"Colorado's second avalanche fatality of the season occurred on Sunday in an area south of the town of Marble. The avalanche happened in the Raspberry Creek drainage which is part of the Raggeds Wilderness area. CAIC forecasters will visit the area on Monday, January 14th, and we will post more information when it is available. Our thoughts go out to friends and family of the victim."

CAIC updated its incident report tonight with two images of the slide that appear to be taken from a heli. Worth your while evaluating these - links to the high-rez versions:

this article provides some detail on conditions where this tragedy occurred as well as putting a name and face on the victim. deep bows to everyone affected by this incident but especially to the rescue folk that put their lives in considerable danger recovering the body.

I know pictures make it tough to tell, but damn that looks low angle. That is a risk I might have taken.

That bowl funnels down into a narrow chute that runs down thru some heavy timber. I feel badly for his friends and family and am glad SAR got in and out of there in one piece.

Looks like a really fun line in the right conditions. Charging those trees down the skiers left ridge of their line in the gully would be awesome.

CAIC pics showed the ski tracks and how it was the 4th skier down! Damn.

That is one ballsy line this time of year. Pretty sure those marble folks hit those lines a lot though.

Not to armchair quarterback, but staying on the ridges to either side in the trees probably was a safer line choice, but maybe more sun affected so they headed into the chute proper?
looking for a good book? check out mine! as fast as it is gone
