How to do the colored snow effect in The Weekend
I spent some time trying to figure out how to do the colored snow effect in Abe Kislevitz's last video, The Weekend. I think I got pretty close. Here is a video explaining how I did it.

Talk about taking the long way around doing something simple. The output looks good (if that's your thing) but it probably took you 10x what it should have specifically using that shot as an example.
Using that shot since there is so much contrast I would have duped it, and keyframed a mask. You could probably do 5 or so keyframes over the duration instead of rotoing every frame. Then, since the contrast is so high, you could luma key out everything but the white and boom... there is your matte. Sure, on a harder shot rotoing everything is essential but for that shot it is 100% unnessesary.
And to think, we used to have to roto with masks frame by frame and the newbs just let AE do it for them.
PS... you should also explain they need to roto brush in the layer because it doesn't work in the comp window.
PPS... wrong forum, JONG!Last edited by systemoverblow'd; 12-20-2012 at 09:53 PM.
