Makingturns in the Tenmile-Mosquito Range
Long time maggot KillingCokes recently finished a long term goal of self-publishing a guide book for his home stomping grounds of the Tenmile-Mosquito range in CO.
Although it is certainly region-specific, I think it has a wider audience; and am putting the word out to the collective. It’s not designed as an oversize coffee table book on purpose; instead compact and portable in case you want to toss it in your pack. I have several books about various places in the world that I don’t plan on visiting any day soon. It’s in large part an adventure story book with brilliant photography; so in that light, a coffee table book it can be.
Additionally a lot of the decisions about routes, timing, which direction the slope is facing etc can be interpreted to any mountains on the globe, from a sense of backcountry awareness.
I’ve known Fritz for many years and he’s been working on this book the whole time. Honestly a few years in, I wondered what was taking so long. But after I saw it all put together, it became clear. There is a ton of info in here. 320 pages of very detailed locations, routes, options, maps, and pictures.
(Not to mention he is busy raising a couple of high energy boys)
A bunch of the locals saw it at the CAIC fundraiser where he had a table set up to generate a nice chunk of skrilla for CAIC. But if you weren’t able to go you should take a look, this is an awesome resource to have for getting out of the resorts. With this resource available I would not even think of climbing any mtn in this range (Summer or Winter) without checking Fritz’s notes. Similar to the several other guide books I own, having someone’s first hand input of a route can save the day as time is almost always limited in these pursuits. Many of the routes Fritz had to go back and nab on another day because of finding the routes by trial and error.
Similar in a lot of respects to the legendary “Dawson’s Guide to Colorado’s Fourteeners” it provides detailed routes, topo maps, etc, but of course focuses on the Tenmile-Mosquito as opposed to the fourteeners; and additionally adds stunning color photography.
Here are a couple of others’ thoughts on Fritz’s book:
“Colorado has an amazing variety of easily accessed backcounty skiing terrain. So many peaks – so little time. While details on routes in Colorado can be gathered from a variety of sources, Sperry provides a focused hit list that’ll save you time with finding new places to go, as well as finding places to park. More, by focusing on just one mountain range rather than attempting to cover the entire state, “Makingturns” yields an exceptionally intimate feeling for the Tenmile-Mosquito.”

I never heard of this place till the other day. My son who decided we should visit his aunt for Christmas was talking about this area. Said looked like the best BC close to Denver. Is it ski able yet this year? Hopefully those photos are not from a fat year.

Surprised he didn't get out and post something about it on here, himself. Glad you stepped up though.
Been hearing this piece has been selling like hotcakes in Summit County. He put a ton of work into it and it shows - every line is detailed to the Nth degree and he even has teaser lines to encourage you to get out and explore on your own. He covers not just routes, but has sections covering other aspects of the BC as well. In addition, the photos alone would make a great coffee table book.
Way to go man, it's been a long time coming and I'm stoked that you've finally got this work published and out in peoples hands.
Congrats!

Haha awesome timing. Got the book recently after I saw it at CAIC Breck. Used it for the first time today going up Mt Helen in the Tenmile. Awesome hike, great description. The mileage was confusing though!!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
