2012-2013 Duffey Lakes Stoke and Conditions Thread

Hoping to get a Duffey Lakes thread going as there should be enough stoke to keep things separate from the Whistler thread.

Did a weekend tour to Keith’s Hut in the Cerise Creek area on December 8/9. About 15 cm of pow in the area. Did a few laps up to Motel 66 on Joffre after skinning in on Saturday.

    AngryBeard ripping it up.

On Sunday we headed over to Vantage. Grabbed a short lap to check out conditions, then we headed up Vantage to try to ski from the summit. Ended up calling it about 50 m short due to time constraints, but dropped into the NW facing bowl just below the summit. Noticeable wind slab there, but still some decent skiing.

1st photo - Awesome. Makes me wanna get out yesterday and put the skins on!

2nd photo - What happened to the other ski? Anyone who can stomp a landing on one ski deserves respect
I have been training using videos of the radest dudes flying down chutes and couloirs to improve my mind-sphincter coordination.

There was a bit of back slap in between, so it loses some points

The Duffey is doing pretty well at the moment. Time to get out there! My buddy blew an edge out skiing the thing cover in the Coquihalla this weekend, so heading in the Pemberton direction would be my recommendation...

Had 3 great laps on Vantage Ridge today, N and W aspects holding great snow. Didn't see another group all day until back at the parking lot, Clownshoe and all his Avy Ops 2 schoolmates.

    Search for Joffre Central Coloiur.

Make note to find the report of the guy that rapped off the end of his rope to get into it and tomahawked down it.

Lee has a link to that write-up in one of his TRs. I think it's on clubtread somewhere...

Part of the plan for the weekend was to get some beta on Twisting couloir (pretty much dead center in this shot, dropping in halfway down the ridge to lookers right of the peak) for a mission later in the year.

Twisting is a simple climb. Or if you like surprises ski the summit ridge then deke into Twisting. The summit face proper to Twisting has been skied once that i know off. Something about 60- 65 deg 300m of no fall makes it unpalatable to most

Lee, did you get the goods on Marriot Thursday ? We got skunked on the summit of Rohr in a near white out, decided to return to the valley down the first S facing avy path to the hiway. Variable buried sun crust studded with good pow in spots sheltered from Wednesday's sun exposure. 3 hrs truck to truck. Good warm up. Thanks for the uptrack beta.

Question from a Duffey JONG... Never been up to BC before, but I locked in 4 days at the Wendy hut the first week of Feb. Really excited to finally get up there! I'm trying to find out how much kerosene to bring for a few nights. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure I'll have a few more questions as the trip gets closer.

"Heating for the Wendy Thompson Hut is provided by two kerosene heaters. You must provide your own kerosene. The amount to bring depends on how much time you will spend in the hut, how warm you want to be, and how cold it is outside. During cold winter nights (close to -20 degrees Celsius), 4 litres of kerosene will keep the hut toasty. "

Yeah I read that, but it seemed excessive to me? 4 liters a night for 3 nights = almost 10 kg (22lbs) Do people really lug that much in for a weekend and use it all? Just looking for input from anyone who has been before. I don't mind a little cold in exchange for a lighter pack on the approach. I've spent a few nights out in a tent at around -15C and was fine in my down bag.

A - we got pinned down at treeline due to vis getting generally crappy. Skied NE medium shots instead of the one big E shot. Was still pretty good. ROhr's getting popular

I've spent nights in the WT hut where yahoos were pouring kerosene into the heater from a huge jug they brought - it was toasty warm, but stank like crazy. I've also spent nights where nobody brought any kerosene (or ran out during the day) and it's been cold, but fine if you've got a puffy and a good sleeping bag. You'll be fine.

Easy as long as the shround is easy. I bet that's stopped a few climbs.

Man it looks good up there. Jealous.

The hut sleeps 16. I imagine it will be pretty full for a weekend in February. If everyone packs in a liter, there won't be any issues. I don't what people normally do for that hut.

Skied a fairly broken Cayoosh glacier yesterday. Great descent although options are limited with the early season coverage.

    Silly jong questions:

I skied in this area last spring and it was amazing.

Is the road from Duffey Lakes summit to Lillooet plowed all winter?

Is there a good book for the area?
that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...
