Thread: PM Gear Kusala pow

I'm mostly asking because my only experience on a wide-waisted pow ski was a L120. Just going off dimensions and reading this whole thread, it's sounding like Kusala Hybrids may be more my style. If anyone's holding.............?

PM Gear Kusala pow
If we ever get a big storm again, I have some 8lb 190 120 pures I'm looking to take out. Can probably give you an idea of how different they are then. I fully expect them to want to hang on in a turn more than the Kusalas, but we'll see. I think they'll want to plow more too rather than spear through the snow.

Yeah, if you want to fill in a little gap in my ski knowledge I'd appreciate it.

Finally mounted my Kusalas today.
Picked them up from kevino awhile back.
If memory serves they are either the first pair of pure Kusala's that Pat pressed, or the first pair pure's with a layer of rubber.
Taking them and the 191 Lhasa Fats up to the mountain for the next week and praying for powder.
Pretty excited to get on them.
I hope I like them.
On a side note I took a nice core shot (~12" long with 4" of exposed core) to my Lhasa Fats the other day.
When I took them to the shop, the tech said: "Whoah!! Shot of the season!"
Thank God it wasn't near an edge.In search of the elusive artic powder weasel ...

I wasn't sure how I would feel about the Kusalas having never skied a reverse camber / standard sidecut ski (although not much sidecut).
But, after two days of lapping ~8-12" of pow at speed in tight trees, both steep and meadowy, I have to say that the Kusalas are magic.
So intuitive.
Think about turning and one does.
I found myself hauling ass through the trees and shooting through the tightest gaps (sometimes blind) knowing that I could link a turn on the other side.
Extraordinarily playful (at least compared to Lhasa Fats).
I actually felt a little jibby.
Extremely easy to ski, and I had noticeably less fatigue at the end of the day vs. what I normally experience after a pow day with the Fats.
I attribute that primarily to the more upright stance that the Kusalas engender.
Cut up variable snow like butta'.
However, the Lhasa Fats are way more fun above treeline on open steeps.
Below treeline in tighter areas, the Kusalas were money.
For crushing big lines in open bowls, I love the Lhasa Fats (but they typically cramp out my quads by days end).Last edited by pfluffenmeister; 02-25-2017 at 08:04 PM.

Kusalas are still magic!
Upper lift finally opened at MJ (closed until late 2nd day for their 2-day 11" event).
Couple feet of moderately wind affected pow up top.
Fast lift line laps.
They make great landing platforms.
Finally got that stupid pitch essentially untouched (like 5 times WOOT-WOOT!).
edit: Kid in line said that they look like they have "Some Flavor Shape!".In search of the elusive artic powder weasel ...

Just skied my Kusala's two deep days in Jackson.
Boot top to thigh deep (some balls deep)
Sooooo fun.
This ski should be repressed next summer.
Nudge-nudge, wink=wink

If probably buy a pair if I could get like 192 instead of 186. Love mine just wish they were a little longer.
But Ellen kicks ass - if she had a beard it would be much more haggard. -Jer

I picked up one of Otto Parts's old pairs this fall and have only gotten to ski it once so far since low tide lifted. Was a day of 8" of blower, and they were awesome. Really fun skiing hard down the fall line. I got on the lift at one point after hauling ass down a groomed runout then realized I'd just railed down a groomer on 124mm underfoot skis. Can't wait to get more time on them.

PM Gear Kusala pow
So I have kusala and what I call a kusalhasa. That is a 186 Lhasa fat pressed with kusala reverse camber. It is one of my favorites since it does everything well and is really quick but also stable.
But I rode kusala yesterday in a foot of 8-10” snow at my home mountain. It is just so fast and I can go straight all day then just flick heel and turn. With the straight shape they are super stable and in fact really easy to ski.
Pat has mad scientist engineered a really sick ski that can be run but also slays trees. I found myself just looking for features, with speed and then just slash and cut where I wanted.
They eat vertical and I had some going too fast and taking pine branches with me moments. Hats off pat. Great high stoke day for me for sure
Not the best pic but I got the pole point and I’m smiling all the way.
I need to go to Utah.
Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....
