Big Sky trip in January
I'm planning a Big Sky trip in January with four days of skiing. Is it worth spending one day at Moonlight Basin or should I do all four days at big Sky?

This requires no advanced planning as they are at the same place. Wake up in the AM and make the call.

The question is, is it worth it to spend 3 days at Big Sky? If the Headwaters are open (which they probably won't be), going to Moonlight is mandatory.

You will have a blast either way. There is more than enough to keep you satisfied at BS, even if you dont ski the same run twice. Found a little bit of soft yesterday and hopefully by January it will be in great shape. Yes there are a lot of rocks but it is a real mountain, not a hill.

Yep. The later in the season, the better. Mostly.

I think we will probably have the snow for the headwaters to be open by then. I think your best bet is to just check it in the AM.

You should definatly go to Moonlight. Not only are the Headwaters great, the Lone Tree lift, though short, allows you to lap some really nice terrain and it is seldom crowded.

It would be a travesty to overlook MLB. I LOVE that place! Fantastic terrain, cheaper, and like zero crowds or liftlines. Freaking awesome tree skiing, too! You really don't need to plan ahead. Just pick whatever you're in the mood for that day.

It's been said; game time decision. Even without the tram, Big Sky has plenty of terrain. The same goes for Moonlight. If the Headwaters aren't open, there's still plenty to explore.
You're going to have to try really hard to have a bad time skiing out here.
This also bears repeating; this is the rocky mountains and they are called that for a reason. You'll most likely leave with your skis having a bit more character.

Moonlight also faces the right way. Although, in January, it will be a bit like being thrown into a meat locker in your underwear.

Been there end of January - it's all good. MLB is great; decide when you're there, but def 1-2 days.
The andesite rock chews your skis if you go over it; bring some skis that only have a season left on them and charge with impunity. There's a reason why some areas look pristine, but have no tracks.
They may have the SnoBar open at that time - good party. I had fun at the SnoBar, and I'm old. Check the events section of the Big Sky website.

thank you for the replies. I was trying to plan ahead to save around $50 by buying the lift tickets in advance. I guess I'll just wait until I get there.

Moonlight Basin is awesome. Really cool vibe to the place that Big Sky just does not have, I really don't know how to describe it.

yeah, that, and they pay their staff better, instead of importing a bunch of immigrant labor they can underpay from places where it doesn't snow.

It's worth getting the dual pass to ride the North Summit Snowfield if it's open. You have to ride the tram up but you ski down Moonlight's side of Lone Peak. You won't be disappointed. If you want to hike the headwaters it's worth doing a day at Moonlight. If not, stick With Big Sky. Lone Tree lift in Moonlight is also fun. I'm not sure how old you are but if you have an old student ID laying around bring it. Big Sky has a good discount for college students and they don't look at your ID closely.
