Anyone heading up to mammoth from san diego or OC for the weekend? Looking to get a lift leaving Friday afternoon or evening coming back Sunday after riding. I can share gas and driving time.

    Let me know. Thanks.

Ski P.E. program alive despite cost of moving to Mammoth Mountain

“I really thought we would sell enough lemonade to keep June open,” a third grader from Lee Vining Elementary School said to kindergarten teacher Anna Strathman.

But their plea fell on deaf ears, so they redirected the money to cover the increased cost of running the Ski P.E. program at Mammoth Mountain.

“We didn’t want to eliminate children from the program because they couldn’t afford it,” Strathman said, “We want to make it available to everyone.” Sixty-one of the school’s 84 students participate in Ski P.E.

On Thursday, the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation presented a check for $2,500 to Strathman for Lee Vining Elementary School’s Ski P.E. program.

    Par for the course lately.

Between lemonade sales last summer, Strathman said, and donations from “Ernie’s, Fern Creek, Double Eagle, the June Lake Women’s Club, Lee Vining Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization, a special raffle held during Mark Twain Days, and individuals who hear about our need and simply write checks,” the community has been reaching out to these students.

Some of these donors have experienced significant losses due to the closure of June Mountain, Strathman said, but that didn’t squash their generosity.

Even other kids are reaching out: “The ski team kids raised over $2,000 and decided to give half of that to the Ski P.E. fund so that everyone could ski,” Strathman said.

When Strathman showed up with her students at Mammoth Mountain for the first Ski P.E. day of the year, she identified herself, and instead of taking her money, they told her: “It’s on us today.”

The Ski P.E. program at Lee Vining Elementary School runs for four weeks and costs roughly $35 a week for each of the 61 students.

About 40 percent of the students at Lee Vining Elementary School qualify for free or reduced lunches.

The school has lost 17 of its students since November, Strathman said.

“It’s difficult to say whether this is due to the closure of June or not,” she said. “However, we can say that many of our parents are just hanging on and getting through the year.”

With June Mountain open, the Ski P.E. program had 30 parent and teacher volunteers who taught the kids and helped out. And since June Mountain was on the school bus route, there was no increase in transportation costs.

But moving to Mammoth meant they lost their volunteer base and now have to pay $987 every week for instruction, in addition to the cost of transporting the students.

“Sometimes you wonder if anyone cares,” Strathman said, “when you come from a small town, a little bit north of Mammoth.”

    “I feel that they do.”
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

Anyone scope the crest since the sun got on it? Thinking of going and screwing around for a few days. Appreciate the beta or if anyone wants to meet up for laps.

Not really... even the exposed and vulnerable Solitude Banana Chute stayed light and soft through yesterday.

I'm sure reports will vary, and the very highest bits of terrain surely got stripped.

I skied trees in the Crest on Saturday. Some friends skied The Hose. All reports from Saturday were that the snow was good and rather deep. Still, the sun kissing the snow was thickening the mix. I skied some more trees on Sunday. The lower elevations were thickening more noticeably as the day was warmer. This week should be warmer. Let's see....the upper elevation ridges were getting hit with a north wind on Saturday and some texture was visible up high in some areas. So, so surprises in sticking to shady areas, particularly north facing couloirs. Up high, the snow temperature should be manageable. I'd pay attention to transitioning snow temps and wet point releases around rocks.

Viewed from the top of Mammoth at 2pm Sunday, I could not see any tracks anywhere on the Crest. Also looked relatively un-windslapped. Hard to tell what the sun had done but probably the best bet for accessible cold snow. Sunday it was getting pretty gross on anything that had seen any sun at mid-elevation. And was pushing 60 in town.

Inbounds Mammoth was fun SAT/SUN. Great windbuff all over on Saturday. Sunday was less windy, but still some good spots. I wish I could have been around for Friday...

Noflyzone was that you who kicked off the slough 3/4 of the way down PB chute then crossed over to the island skiers right ?
We had just got back from the zone and kicking back on the deck with binocks and spotted what looked like your line in the vid.

Here's another shot of that slide above TJ. Looked like it was triggered by a cut.

Spent a couple days enjoying the high pressure around the lower Crest. Decided to skip the morning slogs and just camped out at Lake George instead. The weather felt more like a surf trip to Baja than the Sierras, musta been around 60 by mid day.

My partner got sick so we didn't go passed the headwall, but up high was definitely looking good.

I've always wanted to ride the Lake George headwall on a big season, when its filled in and spiney but that definitely wasn't happening. This was the closest thing I found.

It was more of a cliff maze than anything with lots of slough releasing on its own in the afternoon.

    Little GoPro clip, nothing special.

Mtbcat - We kicked off some small sluffs but the the bigger one you saw was probably from the two guys who caught up to us near the top, on the trail I broke, then stopped 100 feet below the summit and dropped into our line while we were enjoying lunch . No biggie there was still plenty of untrackedness.

So any reports from Bport? Little Slide Canyon in particular? Is there at least enough snow to skin all the way there?
