A couple of weeks ago I rode up the lift with a couple who were talking about skiing from the top of the gondola, off the back and down to tamarack lodge. I was hoping someone here could answer a couple of questions for me. It sounds like there are a decent number of people who ski that way, but I don't want to do anything stupid. How hard is it to get lost going that way? Is it worth it, or is it mostly a long traverse? I realize it's backcountry, so not patrolled, but I don't know much about the pitch. Is avalanche danger pretty high? Would I be an idiot for going that way if I didn't have a beacon?

Yes it is backcountry and not controlled. Yes it can slide and does slide, yes it is mostly traversing, but there are a few shots to hit. Yes you are and idiot to go without proper gear, backcountry knowledge or solo. Yes people do it all the time and live, but you may be the one who doesn't.
Is it worth it? Not really. Hole in the wall is a fun novelty, but not much more. It is access to other BC, which is worth the effort if you have the gear, et al.

I think the question should be, why would you want to go out of bounds without a beacon and knowledgeable partner just in case it does slide? Even if it's a 1% chance, I know what my answer would be.

ah. I was trying to find info, but didn't quite know what to search for. "Hole in the Wall" is the trick. As for the beacon/avi danger, I didn't know how steep it was back there. Knowing that there are some steep sections means i'm not going without a partner and gear, but that's why I asked. For all I knew, the entire thing was a 20 degree slope and slides aren't much of an issue.

^ Google Maps terrain view, and other online topo resources, gets you 1/2 way there: count topo lines and do the slope angle trigonometry for yourself. That said, micro avalanche terrain (not visible on a topo map) can kill you, but I think that you were looking for overall slope angle information. If you were planning on going out of bounds, solo or not, you'd want to have the topo map burned into your head ... steep or not. Lest we hear about a SAR call from way out at Reds Meadow or something ...

I need to go to Utah.
Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Is anybody besides you and Whyturn getting any of this goodness?
I am off to CO tomorrow, so let's hope they are getting some. It has been a weird year for me. No east side trips for me since Dec, but hitting my fourth state this year for skiing.

Circle of chutes was on the agenda today. PW7 and I decided that a two for one special was in order. Knee deep powder up high, boot high down low, not bad for the lack of snow the last 6 weeks or so. Heres how it went down
Oh man back on the skin track
Yeah its about to get real
PW7 dropping in
Getting Deep
Last turns out of the chute
Slayed!
Devils slide going down
Super fun times, now lets have a refresh.

Still really fun out there (with the right attitude lol) exploring random little stuff. Would be nice to get some real storms though (knock on wood). In the meantime, gotta make the 'magic' happen somehow.
I'll be the hyena, you'll see.

Hi Mammoth locals, I have some friends coming into town this weekend. We'll be in mammoth this sat (the 2nd) through Tuesday (the 5th). Anyone want to show us some backcountry in the area? All expert skiers with an average of some experience in the back country (me a bit-friends a little less). Would be a group of 2-3 joining you. Hope to hear back!

Well so much for just a trace of snow! About a foot on the backside at 1 p.m., and still dumping when I left.
Whoa, what you gotta say?? Whoa, girls turn 18 every day!!!
