Thumbs up Front Range/Boulder Binding Freedom Shop Mount?

Does anyone know a shop in the Boulder area that has experience mounting binding freedom plates?

    Thanks!

I would call Alpine Base and Edge, I have had good experiences there.

Inserts I'd make sure someone knew what they were doing, but any reputable shop can mount a plate.

I spoke to one ski tech at Bent Gate in Golden recently who said they will mount inserts. They have not mounted any of my skis, so I cannot vouch for their workmanship.

Hmm. Alpine Base and edge said they won't mount them. Bent Gate was reluctant because of not having a jig. Any other ideas?

they don't want to do a freehand mount with the provided paper templates?

when i mounted mine i "cheated" and used a solly jig to mark where a soloman holes would be (which assured the holes were centered) and then lined up the plates on the marks for the soloman binder.

I know a freshman Mechanical Engineering student at CU who has done hand mounts with paper templates in jondrums garage a few times. Including the bc skis he has in his dorm with Plums on inserts. If you have all the tools, I'm sure he'd help out for beer money (don't tell his mother I suggested you give "beer money" to an 18 year-old). PM me if you need his details.

    Contemplating buying the bits/pozidrive/drill.

As a renter, I don't own a drill or have a workbench. so I'd have to buy at least $75 worth of stuff and find a place to store it.

Yeah, but you'd get your man card thrown in for free. Never pass up a reason to purchase tools. It'll be a big step for you, buying a 3/8 corded drill and stuff. Take a trip to Tool King, just don't wear your skinny jeans and girl shoes.

Living room floor will do. Every man needs a drill, even if its a corded $10 Craigslist special.

Alright, I was inspired by the Mount Your Own Fucking Skis thread and a few posts in this thread, including Hypnotoad.

So, I bought bits for wood and metal skis from Jon/Binding Freedom as well as an awl and wood glue from Home Depot, borrowed a drill from the office and picked up a 1x4 at the local scrap yard today for $1. Total money spent was in the range of $14.

I did a practice run on the 1x4 tonight-

Keetna wondering what I'm up to-

Alright, I mounted the bindings! ...to a 1x4.

And, they work just fine with my boots!

I'm feeling pretty good after the test mount. I should have time tomorrow of Friday to do the real job. Will post follow up pics.

good one! we got another one converted to doing it yourself. That's one less "shop fucked up my skis thread" and hopefully not one more "I fucked up my skis" thread.

Thanks Jon (and Emily as well)!

Just finished up. Here's what they look like-

Thanks for the advice mags! Its a good sense of accomplishment to mount your own fucking skis!

Kevo, Have someone you trust take a quick look at the forward pressure, or read one of the many threads on here on FKS forward pressure. The indicator on the heel-piece is usually pretty good except on worn out pairs.

    Thanks, Jon.

I've read a ton of the threads on FKS forward pressure. The indicator seems to be a pretty poor way of determining the correct position.

When I got the indicator to line up, the heal block of the boot was able to move up and down about 4mm. I played around with it so that it is as loose a possible with no heal movement. Another half turn would result in play in the heal block. Does that sound about right?

Why not? I have never used Alpine but have never heard anything negative about them.

Yeah, Alpine Base and Edge are the only ones I trust with my skis (as far as shops go), but I also could easily see where they would not want to do something out of their comfort zone. My beginning of the year tunes have always been great, they didn't let their machine de-v hull the nose of my legend 8000's, and everything I've gotten done there has been perfect including a tricky core shot repair). They have great techs, great tools, and Charlie the boot fitter is a wonderful dude. My feet are very happy after Larry the Bootfitter told me I would have to buy new boots for them to work on me.

I'd be more leary of going forward with something they are uncomfortable doing. Not saying what you did ain't gonna work... just saying.

There are various threads on here regarding FKS fwd pressure, including a particularly helpful post by someone who appears to be a Rossi distributor in the UK. Definitely worth searching and reading. After a few pre-releases (really just walking out of the binding) and conversations with shop-tech friends, I run my fwd pressure a little higher than indicator tab recommends (even on new binders). YMMV, and don't blame some random dude on the internet if you get hurt.

Edit: Nice work on your first mount!
