Gr Targee
Nice write up in Powder:
So what is it really like, especially terrain...is it even close to Jackson as far as the availability of high end stuff.

It's my understanding that it is far more mellow than Jackson but with more snow and less people (spent a winter ridning Targhee, haven't been to Jackson). Access our the back seems very nice. Lots of options off peaked. Overall, great place. It's pretty sweet if you like pow and can deal with never having to wait in line.

Targhee is for the normal skier. I.e., the one who isn't going to send it 40 ft. once or twice or make pillows of the cliffs on Rendezvous.
It's got plenty of great skiable terrain, there just won't be anyone to admire your brass balls at the end of the day.I demoed the TECH TALK JONG! pro model this spring and their performance was unparalleled which is good because I ski in a wedge most of the time - bendtheski, 2011

The Ghee has some pucker stuff if you know where to look. Is it jackson NO, is it fun, oh yeah
I need to go to Utah.
Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

I actually like Targhee better than Jackson.
However, unlike Jackson, you cant just ride any lift and have legit expert terrain anywhere you look like how you can get goods off Sweetwater and Casper chairs. Also, you have to hike a bit for it, but you have to do that for the good stuff in Jackson most of the time (outside of first tracks on pow mornings) anyways.
Peaked is pretty awesome, pretty much a half mile long cliff band with anything from easy 0-5 footers to hundred plus hero bombs. Pretty much the only place I've truely experiences a "hottub" type landing ever.
Trees are fun, crowds are non-existent, and attitude is more of hanging with you buddies at a bar than I can ski, fuck, and freebase better than you with my eyes closed.Live Free or Die

I went to both back to back 2 years ago during that 3 week period of no snow for Utah and Wyoming (also known as hell). But I was working and got paid to ride so, can't complain. But that's the disclaimer, both places were hurting for snow, Jackson more than GR.
At that point GR was much more fun, less people, found a stash in the trees, and there is a cliff band to drop too.
Jackson, I surmised, is the one place I have been that has more gnarly terrain than Snowbird. Super fun lines all over that place. However, it was a frozen pile of ice when I was there and it really wasn't much fun (at one point I swear I was sitting on top of 2k feet of steep and icy bumps, personally not my cup of tea), and there were a lot more people. I ended up cruising blues because all the blacks were bumped out, and hitting a few of the little parks they have all over the mountain. However, if there is a good sized storm rolling through, Jackson will be on the top of my list.
Besides terrain, I much preferred the vibe at GR. Feels more mom and pop and local (think Powder Mountain). But that's just my preference.

Okay so are seasonal rentals a possibility at reasonable prices ? I'm thinking of baseing a winter out of there vs the higher prices in Jackson. As long as there is terrain comprable to say the Bird and Alta with a good vibe it sounds worth a shot. Are seasonals at all realistic in Jackson ?

Depending on your skill level/preference, you could get bored with the ghee (GR?)...there is a good reason it's cheaper and less crowded than JH.
If you think it's comparable to Snowbird/Alta, you'll be sorely disappointed.

So let me get this straight: half the people offering advice in this thread have not even skied at both places, let alone on good days?
TGR is a shadow of its former self.
To the OP: why would you consider spending a season in a place you have never been? Other than being in the same mountain range, Jackson and Targhee are absolutely nothing alike. Also, SEARCH JONG. This has never been discussed before.

Well I was looking for advice from those who had been there...I hadn't. And Jong ? lets see, skied world cup as a kid, coached national and world champions after that, Skied in Warren Miller films whan he was the only one and was cool, skied in France , Germany, Italy Austria, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, and at about 20 resorts in the good ole USA. I have done about 100 days up in AK, Stayed at Owens house, Hold Aaire level two cert, found and dug out a few buried compatriots up there when it hit the fan, worked as a Patrol member , have been a contributing member here on TGR for about ten years, hooked up other Maggots and have been hooked up.
What I haven't done is skied either Targee or Jackson...so I looked here for decent advice on the subject.
So while I am pretty sure I'm not a Jong I am positive your a dick, thanks for your insights though.

Somewhere near Boise?

i'll dip a toe in the water...
seasonal rentals....yes, there are plenty of rental options on both sides of the valley as long as you aren't showing up in February or something. (even then housing is not impossible)
it seems you have done plenty of skiing in the past...and just about everybody around here knows that JHMR pretty much owns when it comes to "high end stuff"...so what are you not getting?
not taking anything away from Grand Foghee....it is a great place. it snows up there early and often, and is a blast most of the time.
lastly...unless you are the GSA don't ever say "i'm not a jong" and then try and back it up with facts about how core you are. around here....we are all jongs in our own special way."Everybody's just a couple DUI's away from a chinese scooter" ~~Thomas Jefferson.

Gr Targee
Im just here to say that this^ pissed me off. Fuckin spellcheck or at least get the abbreviation right.
I mean, why abbreviate 'Grand' but then spell out "Targee." But then not even have the goddamn common courtesy to spell Targhee correctly. HAS THE WHOLE WORLD GONE CRAZY!? AM I THE ONLY ONE AROUND HERE THAT GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THE RULES!?So local it hurts...

If I was living up there still I can see myself living on the Idaho side and skiing at the Ghee. It's not the Vill but that is what makes it what it is. And yes, if you want to scare yourself it is there, just not all in your face like the Vill. It's mellow and friendly. I like that. Hopefully the change that is most likely coming doesn't happen too fast.

Ah the collective rises and pens strong retorts.
Why ask you ask ...Targhee wasn't on my radar until I read the article, I was sorta planning on doing Jackson. It sounds like a nice little place but promo pieces in Magazines tend to fluff things up a bit...ever read an article about how gnar Steamboat is ? I'm looking for a place with good skiing that doesn't cost a small fortune to spend time around, aren't we all. And I wasn't try to sound "core" I'm too old to be core anyways. But like so many here I have a passion for snow and big hills to slide down...it was my life for quite a while...then life interupted and mountain life got put on the shelf. I'm ready to reconnect for more than a hand full of short trips a year. Core enough ? probably not.

Naw, don't sell yourself short wstdep! Plenty of upper intermediate skiers spend entire seasons at JH.(some even have good times and get laid...maybe) and i get the feeling sometime that there are some REALLY old fucks hanging out in this forum. you and i are just pups still i bet. come on out, your first Granite lap is on me...i promise it wont suck!

The ghee is fantastic even if tons of inbounds steeps are not readily available.
