How do I unlock an iPhone 3G?
Lost my phone, a friend took pity on me and gave me an old AT&T iPhone 3G they had that was a little beat and they were never going use again. How do I get this thing unlocked so I can use it on TMobile? There are a bunch of websites that offer to do this for $20-40, but they seem to mostly be scams. There's plenty of jailbreaking info out there, but it seems jailbreaking won't necessarily unlock the phone and it's all very specific to the OS version and it can relock when you sync with itunes.

I had to do this about six months ago with my 3G so I would have a cell that could take any SIM in Asia. What I found was that it took a LOT of trial and error since it seemed to be very OS version dependent on which unlock method you use. The common denominator seemed to be that you need the Redsn0w software to do the jailbreak as well as the unlock.
I'm by no means an expert on this so check out this youtube video to give you an idea of whats required. The download links for the software and firmware should be in the comments of the video. You might need to check out a few of this guy's videos, but after watching a few of them I was able to figure it out.

If you are still having trouble let me know and I might be able to give you more help.

With a hammer. That'll unlock you from the shackles that are Apple products, and set you free to go buy a Android!

Just have your friend call AT&T and ask to have the phone unlocked. They'll unlock any iPhone that is out of contract now...finally...those fuckers.

Too bad the free unlocks don't apply in Canada...

Not really an option. It was her mom's phone originally and she's not a close enough friend for me to feel comfortable asking for her mom's phone #, email address, SSN and AT&T Account Passcode.
Are there any online unlocking services that aren't scams? I'd happily pay $40 to not have to deal with the Redsn0w process.

Lots of suggestions for eBay services in this thread on MacRumors.com:. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...453734&page=20
It's worth noting, however, that on T-Mobile you'll be limited to Edge for data, which is really really slow (but you can still use WiFi), but at least it's cheap.
