Time Travel Movies
Time travel has always fascinated me and this new movie Looper has a great premise:
-premise edited out***, based on a Philip K. Dick story
I'd appreciate the insight of the TGRBorg collective in creating a list of movies in this genre.
So, what are the time travel movies out there?
-and if any of you are interested, I'll be time travelling this weekend.
You are welcome to join me, but you will need to supply your own weapons.

If you haven't seen Primer, it's at the apex of time travel movies. Shane Carruth that wrote the film was used as a consultant for Looper.
Others to consider (some already mentioned, some painfully obvious):
- Time Crimes (Los Cronocrímenes)
- Triangle
- Irreversible
- Enter the Void
- Donnie Darko
- Abre Los Ojos (far better than its remake, Vanilla Sky)
- 12 Monkeys
- Butterfly Effect
- Timecop
- Terminator
- Hot Tub Time Machine
- Back to the Future
- Groundhog DayLast edited by PappaG; 10-01-2012 at 03:45 PM.

Memento was a backward time movie.
Time after Time is another cult fave HG Wells chasing Jack the Ripper through modern SF.Last edited by mud; 10-02-2012 at 12:05 PM.

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
Planet of the Apes
Happy Accidents
Source Code
The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey
And Googling "Time Travel Movies yields this whopping list:

PS:
I highly recommend Triangle (which Pappa G turned me onto awhile back. Easily the best of the genre I have seen).
Also, Safety Not Guaranteed is an indie gem. Nice and surprising. Definitely worth the watch.

Midnight in Paris
Sleeper
La Jetee
Je t'aime, je t'aime
unlike Pappa G I didn't think either Abre Los Ojos or Vanilla Sky were any good; the latter at least had a few memorable visuals.

I'm curious as to which Philip K. Dick story Looper is based upon.
I did some digging around the Webz and couldn't find any mention of Looper actually being based upon a Philip K. Dick story. I did find several reviews that cited the film as being "Philip K. Dick-esque" and "Philip K. Dick-inspired", but that isn't the same as being based upon one of his books/stories.
According to the entry in the IMDb database, Looper is solely credited to Rian Johnson (as not only director, but screenwriter) with no mention of either the story, plot, or characters being based upon any material by Philip K. Dick.

Time and Again was a really good time travel book, but hasn't been made into a movie yet.

Time Crimes is a great one. I thought I was the only person who saw that.
I also loved Triangle, all the Back to the Future and any Twilight Zone involving time travel.
Another sort of time travel movie I love is Jacob's Ladder. Very scary movie that you'll think about for days afterward.
Also, the Fountain - its a little hard to follow but Darren Aronofsky directed it and he's pretty damn good.

I am stoked for Looper. Rian Johnson's other films (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) are worth watching as well, especially if you like intricate/mysterious plots. Brick, especially.
I forgot about Triangle, that movie was pretty rad. (Ok, I forgot the title, not the movie itself). I've seen Primer twice and I'm still not totally sure what happened.
Does Run Lola Run count as a time travel movie? It's cool either way.We heard you in our twilight caves, one hundred fathom deep below, for notes of joy can pierce the waves, that drown each sound of war and woe.

Rian Johnson did Brick? That explains the Joseph Gordon-Levitt connection. Solid neo-noir for sure.
