Sunday was a great day at taos: six inches of fresh snow, blue skies and warm temps. The snow was more sierra cement than utah fluff but it skied like butter and was great for covering all the lurking rocks and stumps. After not making the cut on saturday, I hiked and skied pow all morning. it was my first time in taos and i'm seriously impressed with the place. no lift lines, mellow attitude, great snow, and sick terrain off of every lift. Taos locals must know of countless straightline chutes and pillow lines and cliff hucks and sheltered tree shots. I found plenty on my own just poking around for a couple of days. I watched the top 15 men in the super final in ther afternoon. The venue was awesome with tons of options from highspeed straightlines, airs and doubles to big hucks to technical billygoat lines. Spectating was ideal too: every gaper and their brother could see the venue from the top of chair 8(?) and quite a crowd accumulated throughout the day. Some highlights were brian anzini, gary fondl, and justing modroo tearing up the staufinbeg/turbinator area with fluid turns, straightlines, and big airs at the top and bottom of the venue, kiffor berg hucking 80+ ft, jesse hall skiing a sweet untracked line that nobody else touched ending in a straightline to stomped 30 footer, and countless insane billy-goat lines. None of the men in the superfinal disappointed at all; at the end of the day it seemed like any of them could have won. props to taos for hosting a great event, i'll be back next year if its on again.

We just got in at 5am due to the hammering the wasatch is getting right now, I was more scared driving back than competing.
It was really fun, and we have some pics and stories, but sleep comes first.

you bitchass...I can't believe you made me work for you.
Now I'm missing out on having to drive up the canyon with all the traffic. I might even have to eat the free breakfast.
I might even get 1st chair because of you.

seriously though, I'm glad you made it back OK and will be working while I sleep tonight.
I don't know how much of a rallying mood you're in, but it's a morning to rally if you have anything left in ya. Yesterday lots filled in with relatively heavy snow and graupel blowing around in 15-30 mph gusts...it's been at least a foot overnight.

The Taos website just put a great video up with some competition highlights. Go to taosski.com and check out the Feb 13th video. I also tried to upload some of their still shots. Not sure if it worked or not. Congrats to everyone who competed. It was an awsome event.

WOW that's a pretty sweet vid. I really liked that Darrel and Roy's doubles.

Watched the vid. It's a rare occasion that those cliffs are skiable. I dare say the reason Taos competitors didn't jump that stuff is that anyone who skis Taos every day knows that those landings are usually thin and full of sharp rocks.
I'm amazed. I really hope people who see this are wise when they go to Taos and keep in mind that this was a rare combination of heavy snow on good base...otherwise you're throwing yourself onto what's almost always dry snow on a hollow base over very sharp rocks.
