Bump. Jim, how's the project going? You go to a 2 set up bike in the HD? I'm in the process if doing the same. I'd love to have a 29er hard tail (hence my other thread), but this seems to be a cheaper route for the time being.

Ended up sticking with "one" setup on my HD. I've gone back and for with a coil and air shock on the rear (vivid air and CCDB) and also back and forth between an coil and air setup up front (both Lyrik)

The coil up front is without a doubt better. But not enough to transform the fork or anything. I still am searching for something that is a bit more reactive/easier on the hands. The Lyrik is awesome on the big stuff but leaves a bit to be desired (for me) on the small small-medium stuff. (braking bumps for instance)

Next year I'll likely go X-Fusion Vengeance coil AND a Revelation. In the back I'll have a CCDB coil and something like a Monarch.

Wheels I'll have two sets built too. Switch back and forth depending on what is going on.

This sounds like what I was doing with my HD...switching setups constantly to suit the ride(anywhere for 28-32lbs)....I finally got sick of it and just went to 2 bikes that I'm convinced are better at both ends of the spectrum. Reign X and HT 29er. Once in a while I might miss the Ibis for trail duty that doesn't need a ton of travel, or the 29er HT beating, but I'll just have to suck it up for those 2 days per year

In fairness, I don't like the short reach of the HD for it's relatively long seat tube, but many companies went this route in the past few years. The Medium was the correct length seat tube and the large was correct length top tube (The Reign is almost the same TT length spec but the seat tube is in front of the BB so this makes the reach and wheelbase longer for the same spec). Who are these stub leg bikers they are designing for

I hear you guys on the small bump compliance (I've been on my Lyric DH for years now) but I find as long as I stay over the front end and drive this fork aggressively it doesn't bug me. That said, I don't ride this fork at bike parks. I much prefer a true park bike for that type of riding with a 180mm or longer fork.

I think I'm going in a similar route. I've been riding a 160 mode rp23 with coil Lyrik for the past year. I'm generally really happy with the setup. It's a great trail bike, but every time I ride something out of its comfort zone, it leaves me wanting something more plush.

Like every other gear whore in these forums, I'd love to have a different bike for every specific trail I ride. I think a HT 29er, DH/FR bike, and 140 HD could be the killer quiver. But at the moment, I'm trying to make my HD act as the Swiss Army knife that it is, because buying two more bikes is completely out of the question.

My plan is this... I just bought a used coil Elka for the park days and 160 mode riding. I'm in the market for a 140 mode rp23. My current Lyrik is 4.5 years old and is desperately in need of replacement/upgrade. 2 forks would be ideal, but I'm wondering if an x-fusion HLR DLA Vengeance could be a one fork does all. It's heavy at 5+ lb, but I can ride it at 170 with the coil and 140 with the rp23. Not sure ultimately how well that would work, but its a way of maybe squeezing out another year before making any serious bike investments. I'd also pick up some Azonic Outlaws or something similar for park riding days. I have a set of CK Flow wheels for general trail riding set up for tubeless.

As PFH indicated, this might end up being a giant PITA due to changing shit around so much. The only thing is for me, I only ride lifts a handful of times per year. Not enough to justify the DH bike purchase... Yet. Maybe part way through next season that could be mor of a reality. For now, people like Skijunky are still doing things far beyond my current skill level on the HD, and I have plenty of room to grow on a great frame that I already own...

Just put a CCDb air on the back, and be done with it?

Nah, that would be too easy and way under thought. This thread is for those of us who like to torture ourselves with mental masturbation on how many bike setups we can have with the exact same frame.

With that said, I'd rather have a Monarch rc3 if I were to go with such an over simplified plan. The Ibis forum shows a bunch of customers who were underwhelmed with the CCDB performance. CC might have done some kind of correction for that, but I wouldn't know.

Couple things.

1) Racing changes everything. If I were just riding, I think a Vivid Air or Monarch Plus RT3 would be more than sufficient paired with any of the 160-180mm 35-36mm forks and a light-ish wheelset.

2) I have a 29er hardtail. Its my fun-do-everything hardtail. It doesn't hold a candle to the HD on long long days or really rough trail riding situations. The DH build on the HD is too heavy to really be fun on those really really long days. I want a build option that is in between. And again, the racing thing comes into play too.

3) I have an XL HD. Fit is awesome.

4) Yes, 3 bikes is the right call. Burly DH-ish trail bike, lighter FS trail bike and my XC race bike. However, I'd probably build a Mojo SL-R as my lighter FS trail bike. HD is that exact bike with a bit burlier layup and better geo. Hence...this makes perfect sense for me. (I'm not buying 2 HDs...yet)

EDIT: CCDB Air is a completely different feeling shock to me. Super strange spring curve, not nearly as sensitive. Very good air shock but not the buttery goodness of the coil. Arbitrarily, 60-90% as good depending on frame, rider preferences etc.
