i dunno if M still posts here but he unfortunately (maybe not so unfortunately for him) does not work at BC any longer. last i heard he was doing construction type stuff and cooking up an idea to ride his touring bike down through central america then hop a boat to cuba and back to the US or something. no joke.

I've been ignoring this thread because I thought they weren't actually gonna switch to the beta site, but it's looks like they've done it.

I'll say it now, I loved how much the previous site was focused on user reviews. The new site puts everything in little columns, which makes the product description take up more vertical space (more scrolling to get to reviews) and it means the reviews are literally 1/3 of the white screen. There's so much wasted space horizontally. Stupid design.

I figured out what bothers me...

There's not a very good separation between the items and descriptors - which collectively gives the page too much of a messy / jumbled look. The actual product pages are fine IMO.

The general layout of the site seems to be the same, with some new cleaner/modern fonts and larger pictures.

I can't really find anything to complain about.

I think there needs to be better seperation between the products. Right now it looks like something that a kid would make in Word.

Wayyyy better than the old site IMO. And I haven't worked there for 3.5 years, so that's an outside opinion.

Does your local shop have amazing prices and a lifetime warranty/return policy.

I ruin gear fast. rei is the only other place that stands behind what they sell and i hate rei. backcountry has better prices and way better customer service than rei.

I don't think you understand the motive of my original statement. Though it has nothing to do with what I intended, the answer to your question is, yes they have good prices and the best policies.

Does anyone else think the new site is much slower than the old one? I've tried it on 4 different computer on several different networks and it's slower on each one. It takes about 6 seconds to load a page whereas the old one took about 1-2 seconds. Doesn't sound like much, but when you're clicking all over the site, it adds up.

What if BC.com is my local shop, started right in my backyard and I know many of the employees that work there?

prices are ok. the big difference is that there are no taxes on top of the sale from bc.com, which is wrong in my opinion.

After being a local shop tech for 5 years and being treated like garbage, I got a job at backcountry, and they have taken great care of me, my family, and my friends. If a local shop isn't going to adapt to the current business climate to take care of their employees and customers, might as well support those that do. Backcountry is doing great things for the local outdoor community and is a pretty damn cool place to work.

Speak for yourself. I get charged taxes every time.

I don't mind the new layout. What is it about change that scares people so bad?

Agreed, my friends that work there love it. For an industry job it actually pays decent.
I mean all industry jobs a low paying but they seem to be ok.

Not a fan of the new site, although some cool search functions would be cool like sorting skiis by waist width or by weight would be awesome, I think it is just a bit harder to browse and the color layout while it looks cool doesn't help lead the eye around the page
